I purchased the book originally anticipating patterns and helpful construction advice. Unfortunately, this was not provided. The book primarily focuses on embellishments, etc. While the bags are dated, they can stimulate some ideas. Unfortunately, many of the shapes, etc. are long past being stylish.

The introductory chapter which gives basics of pocketbook construction are useful. The rest of the book deals mostly with embellishment and sewing techniques. I was disappointed. The color reproduction is good but many of the bags are dated and not fashionable at all.

Having given up much of my past creative sewing due to long working hours, Linda's book reminds me that sewing today is indeed a creative art form--and that the needle art forms produce not only attractive items, but useful ones as well. The excellent photos help even a novice with the details of construction and serve as a springboard for exercising one's own creativity!

Linda McGehee is the queen of structured bags. Her instructions are well written and her patterns are easy and fun, while still making elegant bags. It's all about the fabric, and Linda's samples are gorgeous. They go from fun with frogs and embrodery to elegant and dressy. You can find inspiration in this book.

This book inspired me to start not only making bags but also selling them and I have become very successful. I sell to friends and acquaintances and I also sell them in markets. This book has been a guide, and Linda McGhee made the bag-making mechanism so simple, and consequently I decided to try it. The first bag I ever made was of rectangular shape with zip closure and from a simple cotton material. I was asked by a friend to make this bag from a skirt that she didn't wear anymore. She was very pleased with the outcome. Then I decided to make another bag from a cotton print and with the insertion of red soft leather and another friend of mine saw it and asked me if I could sell it to her. At that point I was impressed. I was surprised that she like it so much. It is true that I have some knowledge about making clothes, but I had never thought about making bags. At present I am more successful with bags than clothes. So, I would highly reccomend this book because thanks to Linda McGhee, I am currently making all kinds of bags and I am always improving.

I was hoping for some patterns to make different style handbags but this book didn't provide that. It was more a show and tell type of book, but there were ideas and instructions on how to embellish a handbag.
