2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
I ordered this model thinking it was prebuilt. It came as a stamp-molded plastic kit with hardly anything in the box.

It's been sitting in my closet since I bought it. Maybe when I'm old, I'll pull it out and try to put it together.

Not a difficult model to assemble. Even including painting, this can be a pleasant weekend project. I thought the instructions were fairly sketchy and limited, but my model building experience served to "fill in the blanks" for any steps not explained. An oddity: I ended up with some pieces that are absolutely NOT addressed in the instructions; nor shown in the picture on the box. The pieces are NOT a part of the ship, I am sure; but darned if I know what they are.

My model (and I presume all like it) is of the USCGC Cape Gull. There actually was a Cape Gull 95' USCG Cutter, commissioned in the late 1950's. One historical note: The modern-day bow stripes (orange and blue) seen on USCG boats and ships came about long after the Cape Gull was commissioned. To be historically accurate in depicting the Cape Gull as she was originally painted, I suggest completing this model without attempting to paint the bow strips as they are shown in the picture on Amazon and the box. If you insist on adding the bow stripes, know you will have to hand paint them as there are no decals. In fact there are also no lines on the bow/hull to show where to paint the stripes or hull bottom.

The USCG is an often unappreciated branch of the US military. Decades ago, I served on the USCGC Unimac, a WWII Navy Seaplane tender converted to duty as a Coast Guard Cutter. Good ship, good crew, good memories... sure wish I could find a model kit of her. "Semper Paratus!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Model of Cape Class patrol boat from the '50s, February 12, 2010

Vintage molded kit has 2-piece full hull, detailed superstructure, 2 "mousetrap" anti-submarine rocket launchers, twin 20mm guns, depth charges, separate deck fittings and stantions, lifeboat, 3 crew figures and display stand.

A fine reissue of a larger kit (14" long) that goes together well. Suitable for Radio Control conversion with today's micro components. Nice to see this old kit again so they should be snatched up at every opportunity. I should add it is difficult to find boat kits of this size anywhere because it is a rare subject (and scale; 1/82 is almost HO scale) for most model kit manufacturers. It is a kit, folks, not a prebuilt shelf queen. What part of "easy to assemble" do you not understand?
