This model was in fact patterned on the Fleetwood (UK) mid-distance (Faroes and Iceland) fishing boat the Hildina. It was copied (some say pirated) from the Model Shipways wood kit of the Hildina released in the late 1950s. The main noticeable difference in this kit from the original ship, and the faithful wood model, is that the deckhouse in the Lindberg model is low and angular rather than the more spacious and accurate curving shape of the Model Shipways kit. The Hildina is illustrated in Bjorn Landstrom's 1961 book, The Ship, and the models are patterned on Landstrom's accurate profile rendering of this 135-foot trawler.Lindberg did a creditable job on this kit, with the exception of flattening the bridge structure somewhat. The sail on the mast at the stern is a relic of the motor trawlers of the 1930s to the 1950s--it was simply a steadying sail, meant to check the rolling of the vessel in heavy seas and provide minimal wind-powered assistance. My own build of the model cut out the full hull model at the waterline and built it on a simulated foam plastic sea base. It is, imho, one of Lindberg's better efforts.

Authentic Model of a 1950's Sidewinder Trawler,

This Lindberg kit presents a rare opportunity to model an almost nonexistant class of fishing vessel. Up until the 1960's, this type of trawler dominated the fishing grounds of the North Atlantic. While I am not certain that this model depicts a particular vessel, it is very representative of the type. There is a boat, the Hildina H222, that this model is almost identical to. It is non-typical of Lindberg kits having rather fine detailing on a lot of the small parts like the railings for instance. It goes together quite well considering the kit's age. Hull is 17" long molded in white and includes a display stand molded in brown and a spool of rigging thread. The description says that it includes sails but there's only one, a drifting sail for the stern mast. I rated the durability low because it is a model kit. A great kit that with today's small components can be converted to radio control quite easily.
