The Line 6 Podxt,
By Smiegal "SAB" (Lost In Iraq) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Line 6 PODxt (Electronics)
This Line 6 Podxt is awesome and I have just started playing with it. I am sure there is so much things this Podxt can do I have just not discovered yet. It can give a direct studio recording or use it live or hook it straight to your desktop through a USB port. I can make it sound like my old Univox amp or I can make modern synth effects great for playing Industrial or make your own sounds. I even hooked my mic and made some great vocal effects as well.

An amazing guitar tone producer!,

Leave your pedals at home and get ready to grab one of the coolest products around. I bought the PodXT when it first came out to play with my Steinberger Synapse SS-2F Electric Guitar, Alpine White to have an ultimate portable experience. I was always an acoustic guitar player (and now into Flamenco) but wanted to delve into Electric guitar with the right kind of equipment. Well, to my surprise this kidney bean shaped Line 6 PodXT really fit the bill. Instead of buying a bunch of guitar pedals, I was able to get a boatload of tones from one item. And what is even better, I can make my PodXT unique by creating and downloading my own tones.
As I said in my most recent Line 6 Pocket POD Pack review, the customer service for Line 6 is really excellent. I actually had to return my PodXT for a lookie after spending almost 3 hours on the phone with a techie trying to work out some weird kinks. I sent it off and had a new, fixed PodXT very quickly. What impressed me most was the great attitude of people who love their job and are musicians themselves. They know their equipment and guitars! I was very impressed. The PodXT is extremely sturdy and made of metal. I recently bought the new Line 6 Pocket POD Pack to give myself a bit of portability. I thought that the Pocket Pod might be a nice replacement to my PodXT. I have decided to keep both of them as they will serve different purposes. The PodXT is not the NEWEST Pod on the market anymore. But for the price, you are getting a real value. I paid about $150.00 more than is currently advertised on Amazon. This unit really rocks, is sturdy and flexible. As with all Line 6 products you get a wonderful website that offers new tones that you can download and upload (if this suits your creative side). There are lessons, tools and extra content to be had. I love the company and always keep an eye on the latest products. This is a great unit and you can expect a great experience from Line 6. Coolness to the maximum! 5 stars.

Make no mistake - this is not an effects board. It is a full-up amplifier modeling processor. You must use it properly to
take full advantage of what it offers. I have used the PodXT into the front end of a guitar amp, into the line-in of a keyboard amp, and into the power-amp in of another amp. In none of these cases did it sound that good. Tinny and electronic comes to mind. Once I plugged it into a flat-response full-range monitor, however, it came alive. Absolutely gorgeous sounds can be extracted from this thing if you use it in this fashion. FWIW, I use a KRK Rokit 5G2, which is a little ~20W powered monitor. I have also found that high end computer speakers work quite well (think Z-5500's). In this case, the woofer actually makes a difference with the low end. The built-in patches are not that great, but there are many available online which can be downloaded for free. All in all I am completely happy. If there is a better way to get a Soldano SLO-100 w/4x12 cabinet sound for under $300, I would really love to know what it is.

Everything and More,

I literally got 'the shakes' when I played my first riff with the PODxt. The sound is so incredible, you really won't believe what you're hearing. If you've listened to a good Bose© system, and how you were blown away by the sound; it's the same feeling.
I'd consider myself a 'Tech Guru' along with 'Musician', and honestly I was a bit overwhelmed when I began setting up and using the PODxt, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. If you've ever used a big Amp with a bunch of effects and buttons, it's sort of like that. Of of the best features I found on the PODxt is the 'Line 6 Edit' software ([...]), and Mac (all OS X including Tiger) compatible. I can edit tones quickly and easily, it's all so seamless, you'll be amazed. The other amazing feature is the website that links with Line 6 Edit; I can go to the site, and type the name of a song I'm going to play, and instantly a new tone (designed perfectly for that song) is in the editor, ready to be transferred to my PODxt. This is without a doubt the best 'Bang For Your Buck' deal around - if you're into Guitar and making great music, the PODxt if for you. ~Rob Hedrick

This thing is a gift- it is amazing. It made playing exciting for me again. I get a second amp- a small one- and plugged it into the second channel. The delay settings on the Pod are really good. The echo delay through two amps is a complete blast.

A Tone Generating Marvel!,
This review is from: Line 6 PODxt (Electronics)
I have had my POD XT for a couple of years now and I can assure you, it is an amazing piece of gear! Of course purists will say it is never as good as tube amps and pedals, amp microphones, processor racks, etc... but I have been playing 30 years and I can say without a doubt this little thing can generate just as good or better tones than any of my old expensive gear could do, and it all fits on my desktop. I don't even use my amp or pedals anymore!
The Gear Box software makes it very easy to modify patches and you can download patches from numerous places (Google it) and they just load right into Gear Box where you can tweak them to your liking. With a little bit of patience and some playing around you can get amazing tones from a POD XT. I have a You Tube site under the user name duey101 and you can go there and look at the videos I have made, all of them with the POD XT. People are always asking me what amp, effects, processors, multi effects, and mics I use and can't believe I get all that tone from a little POD XT, but I do! In order to do so you definitely need to buy the expansion packs, (metal shop, FX Junkie, etc) and all are worth every cent! The POD XT plugs right into your USB port and you can record directly into your favorite audio program (I like to use Samplitude and Acid Pro). It works flawlessly and sounds incredible. f you plug it into your amp then you have to tweak it to sound like it does through headphones. The POD XT is metal and built like a tank, you don't need to worry about it getting damaged if you drop it, the thing is sturdy and well built. If you want an amazing piece of gear, the POD XT is it.

Not a Single regret!,
This review is from: Line 6 PODxt (Electronics)
I've had this little kindey-shaped pod for a while now, and all i can say is that, the Modeling and AIR systems really do their job. I've spent lots of hours in studios playing with some great valve amp heads and man, this pod is for sure if not the best, one of the best amp simulators around for just about us $300.
IMAO, it lacks a LITTLE bit of Depth [as the majority of digital simulators/pedals]..but just a little, this can be solved later on your Pc. Believe me, this little fella is compact, robust and easy to use! I'd chose the PODxt over my little 45W Marshall/Mic setup since i can't get the right tone out of it. Forget about moving the amp and that bunch of cables, placing the mic, worrying about your room acoustics etc...if you need a neat thing, this is it. Of course, i recommend this POD to those who make their own music, Demos, or whatever, its just great. But i wouldn't risk on taking it to a professional studio and record your band's new Album with it. I'd rely on the big Amp and mic setup. The USB connection is really fast (not on a Hub, place it in a single dedicated connector), the sound is truly dynamic when recorded on your Pc, works as a DI box and the headphone output delivers great tone. Maybe i'll use the Audio L/R outputs later, usb is just fine. I use it every day, and haven't had a single regret. The only reason to give it those 4 stars, is just because you'll need the FBV swithfoot board to gig live. So, yeah..

If You Use Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger, Do Not Buy A PODxt,
This review is from: Line 6 PODxt (Electronics)
No matter what any other reviewer tells you, if you use Mac OSX Tiger 10.4, you will not be able to utilize the Line 6 Edit software that comes with the PODxt. As of 10/14/05, Line 6 has not updated Line 6 Edit software for use with Mac OSX 10.4. Why is this such a big deal? Because Line 6 Edit software enables you to edit a PODxt's settings from your computer easily. Without Line 6 Edit software, the PODxt is practically impossible to edit. Without the ability to to edit the PODxt easily, the unit is only worth half as much. Line 6 is not very Mac friendly, so don't expect the software to be updated anytime soon. If you're serious about purchasing a PODxt, check the Line 6 website to make sure the unit AND software are compatible with the operating system you are using.
This information is taken directly from Line 6's website: "Is Line 6 Edit for Mac or a Windows PC? ...We have not yet evaluated Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and can not yet provide information on compatibility." In other words, IT DOESN'T WORK WITH MAC OSX TIGER 10.4! |
