Quirky and Charming Characters,
By
This review is from: The Line (Paperback)
The main character, Lucy Karate, has more depth than one would expect out of a YA novel. This remarkable first effort from a former band geek is funny and angsty in all the right places. I couldn't help but smile as I read, remembering my own band days. While it's easy to understand for people who were not immersed in that pseudo-cult in high school, this book is a blast of nostalgia for those who were. It's a fun, breezy read that left me wanting another Lucy adventure from the author.

Fun and energetic!,
This review is from: The Line (Paperback)
This book is excellent! Not being someone who knows a lot about marching band, this book completely sucked me into the "band geek" world. Courtney does a great job of balancing the typical high school life of character Lucy Karate with the high competitions of drum line. I would reccommend this book to anyone, no matter if they have had past or present experience or interests in marching band. It will appeal to any audience looking for a great read!

Great Read - a must for those in band!,
This review is from: The Line (Paperback)
Courtney Brandt is quite the up and coming author, writing an entertaining and engaging story that highlights the band world as well as much of the drama during teenage years.A good read - it'll leave you either reminiscing about band days long ago or psyching you up for the next season.

So, I haven't purchased this book. Yet. I definitely plan to. I know it is an awesome book because before Courtney published this book and the three after it, they were online at Fanfiction.net. So, I'm a nerd and read fanfiction religiously but I read all four of these before they were published and fell in love. So yes, I have read all four at least once but the fact that I plan on purchasing them after I read them for free says a lot. They are no longer on fanfiction in their entirity so I feel I must purchase them because I loved them so much.If you love band and drama then this book is definitely for you. ome have sadi that this first book isn't that great and though I do not agree, the next three get even better in my eyes. Don't knock it until you try it. I am 17 and I normally HATE reading YA novels but this has more depth than most others and it is truly a great read. Buy it, you're bound to love it.

Not really about band.,
By Alex "The Girl" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Line (Paperback)
I cannot express how much I wanted to like this book.A family member is a drumline/indoor nut and I, a woodwind player, have followed suit. I picked up this book thinking it would be about a girl's experience in marching activities, with some romantic tension and such. I also wanted to support a fellow bandie. I thought maybe I would find a protagonist who was as in love with marching band as I am. What I got was really different. This book focuses on Lucy's romantic expeditions rather than her experiences in band. Though all the guys discussed are in band, scenes of competitions/rehearsals/performing, minus the scores, usually last about a paragraph. This is not how it happens in real life. The writing was also simplistic, and often relied on capitalized letters like THIS to make a point. Unfortunately, I already bought the sequel "A Fine Line". Guess I'll be hearing more about Lucy. In short, this book was presented as a band book with romance. But what you get is the exact opposite.

This book was ok. It wasn't breathtaking or something steven king would give two thumbs up, but it was a good read. It was simple vocab too.The only thing that was really bittersweet was the drama. It had a sort of Romeo and Juliet feel. Which, really, kept my attention but detered from the idea of a "drumline" book.

Fun, intriguing, and delightful.,

The Line is a well spun story with the most intriguing subtleties. The search for a young girl's identity, her power, and her sense of place are the overriding themes in this delightfully feminist story of a high school girl in a marching band. There is something here for everybody. Courtney has created an endearing character in Lucy Karate who gains her strength and stands up in the face of intimidation. Great job on this work of literature!

The Line...a review by a bassgirl,
This review is from: The Line (Paperback)
I am a sophomore in high school, I am on the drum line, and I play 2nd bass. The Line is the most amazing book I've read. This book captures what being a girl on a drum line is like. It's freaky how much I have in common with Lucy. 5'4" burnett, girl, 2nd bass drumer, I feel the same way about my boys on the line, I feel the same way about the whole 'for a girl' thing. Its so weird, it was partly like reading about me. I can relate to so much of this in the book, except the whole dating two guys at once and having to choose thing. This is deffinetly my favorite book ever. I love how its about a girl durmmer that plays bass and works hard for evreything and wants to keep going. I love how there are deffinitions to different things at the begginging of each chapter. I love the whole story line, its amazing. I recommend this book to everyone, drummer or not. It is truely an amazing book. Every time I picked it up I didn't want to put it down, I got so into it. go out, buy it, and read it!!
