Book Description

September 13, 2000
"Jack Kelly writes like a man ready for a rumble." -New York Daily News

"One of the rules... You don't mess with married women. It's tempting, sure. Forbidden Fruit. He got, I want. But you're only buying trouble and there's enough trouble to be had for nothing."

So says police officer Ray Dolan. But when the sultry Sheila Travis moves in next door, the rules go out the window.

Line of Sight is a stunning example of the neo-noir genre, complete with breathtaking plot twists, crackling dialogue, and sizzling eroticism. It promises to establish Kelly as one of the most stylish writers of crime fiction, on a level with Elmore Leonard, James Ellroy, and Walter Mosley.

Ray Dolan is a man haunted by looking. He spends his days keeping watch over a decaying rust-belt city, his nights peering at the stars. Then the seductive glimpse of a woman's shape in a window draws him into a nightmare of murder and accusation.

Dolan knows who's innocent and who's guilty. But does he know how to escape from a terrifying sexual and moral labyrinth? The story unfolds in prose that has the glint of a knife blade in the dark.

The explosive novel reminds the reader that each of us walks through a minefield of hidden obsession and unexpected passion. A wrong step, a wrong look, can transform our desires into violence with lethal suddenness.

Line of Sight brings to mind noir classics like Double Indemnity and Body Heat. At the same time, the novel goes beyond the hard-boiled genre to explore the moral and emotional dimensions of obsession, crime, and police power in American society.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

A straight, not-so-smart cop who falls for a sexy married woman with her eye on a quick exit from her marriage (with the proceeds from a hefty insurance policy on her husband's life, natch) makes Line of Sight a noirish thriller that could go right from the manuscript to the B-movie screen. When Ray Dolan meets Sheila Travis, you can see the ending coming in this barely steamy mystery that's long on heavy breathing and short on characterization, pacing, and plot. The reader longs for Ray to smarten up and get out of Sheila's bedroom before she puts a gun in his hand and makes him do something he'd never imagined doing, but of course he does it anyway. The only surprise is that he gets away with it (sort of), but not until over 300 pages of turgid prose have been flipped. The real mystery is which James M. Cain novel Jack Kelly had at hand when he penned this one, and how many pages one can read until the flight attendant announces the in-flight movie and beverage service. (Hint: all of them.) Is "Howard the Duck" better entertainment at 30,000 feet? You be the judge. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly

Kelly writes in a clean, uncluttered style reminiscent of James M. Cain, featuring basically good men up against dire circumstance. In his third novel (after Appalachian and Mad Dog), the main character is a police detective, Ray Dolan, in an upstate New York city. He is a quiet man who finds satisfaction in doing things well and by the book. The dire circumstance in his lonely life turns out to be a new next-door neighbor, sexy, sad Sheila Travis. Sheila's husband seems to be a drunk and a bully, but she's soon encouraging the infatuated Ray to drop by and shed his uniform. When her husband is killed, what can poor Ray do but try to help her out? Thus begins a tortuous tale that goes on springing shocks virtually until the last page. This is a headlong read, with some real suspense, but Kelly's efforts to keep the reader constantly guessing sometimes leads him astray. Ray, for instance, is made to seem far more gullible than a man in his position probably would be, and the shenanigans of his best friend, fellow detective Frank Kaiser, as he investigates the Travis killing, should have made Ray suspicious much sooner. The story also has at least one double-cross too many, and the climax is over the top. Still, in its lean, noir way, this page-turner keeps its momentum, with a brace of camera-ready characters, including one unforgettable femme fatale who could send movie producers looking for the present-day equivalent of Barbara Stanwyck. 5.0 out of 5 stars excellent noir thriller, August 26, 2000
This review is from: Line of Sight (Hardcover)
In Mansfield, New York everyone considers Ray Dolan to be a by the book police officer. Though he enjoys his job and his simple lifestyle, Ray remains a lonely person having no family, girlfriend, or close friend. That changes when the Travis family moves near Ray. He becomes obsessed with sexy but sad Sheila who acts like the victim of spousal abuse.

Sheila senses Ray's infatuation and begins to take advantage of him. When her husband is murdered, Ray comes to Sheila's aid. Even as he knows who the killer is, Ray cannot stop interfering with the official investigation in order to keep Sheila safe, even at the cost of his own life.

LINE OF SIGHT is an in your face Noir novel that never slows down for a moment. The story line is filled with twists and turns that continually fool the audience. Sheila is a great female character in the mode of Double Indemnity (or perhaps Jessica Rabbit). Readers will feel empathy towards Ray, but at the same time want to smack him awake because he seems a bit too ingenuous. Fans of non-stop action filled with double crossing twists will enjoy Jack Kelly's taut tale.

Line of Sight is a fast-paced, plot-driven page-turner. Like a bowl of freshly-popped pop corn, you just can't put it down until you've reached the last kernal. Kelly is masterful at imitating the noir genre while giving it his own unique twist. Predictable and yet surprising. Perfect book to hunker down with on a cold night, take on vacation, escape with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable yet stimulating, May 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Line of Sight (Hardcover)
Line of Sight is full of classic noir-cop-detective elements, so I thought I was nestling into comfortable fiction territory as I settled into reading the book. But Jack Kelly has written a book that is simultaneously familiar yet new, nostalgic yet fresh. Kelly's characters are familiar with a twist, predictable yet surprising. His telegraphic style at first seemed choppy and awkward to me, yet by page three his concise words were painting vivid scenes of landscapes both psychic and physical. I thoroughly enjoyed the synthesis of familiar and new in this book. Its images and emotional mood will stay with you for a long time.
