Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 6^-12. This is really two books in one. The first section is a guide to in-line skating basics for novices. The second section is devoted to the new and growing sport of roller hockey. For novices, Werner provides succinct, straightforward advice on choosing skates, wearing protective gear, the skater's basic stance and movements, and how to handle falling. Safety is covered, though not as extensively as some parents might wish. Numerous black-and-white photographs illustrate movements, but some may be difficult for a rank beginner to interpret. The roller-hockey section is the stronger of the two. It contains a wealth of details on hockey skating skills, stick work, shooting, passing, and defense. The text throughout has a conversational tone and an enthusiasm readers will find appealing. There is an extensive glossary and a list of resources, including videos, magazines, and organizations. Review

This beginner's guide covers roller hockey as well, introducing bare-bones beginners to a sport which is easy to learn. Over a hundred photos cover everything from purchasing equipment to learning techniques, from basic skating form to hockey competition. -- Midwest Book Review

This review is from: In-Line Skater's Start-Up: A Beginner's Guide to In-Line Skating and Roller Hockey (Start-Up Sports series) (Paperback)
This book was very helpful. However, it gave too much advice about things I am good at. Such as skating, simple shots, etc. This is the ideal book for beginners and those who want to get started.
