Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Spider Valve MkII 212 40-watt guitar amp combo is the result of a ground-breaking collaborative effort between living-legend amp designer Reinhold Bogner and renowned amp-modeling upstarts Line 6. On the heels of its celebrated predecessor, the original Spider Valve HD100 combo (the #1-selling tube 2x12 amp in America*), Spider Valve MkII 212 offers the best of both worlds: brawny, boutique-style tube tone and the latest, most advanced Line 6 amp modeling with complete flexibility and deep editing.

Build your sound from the ground up with 16 of the most advanced Line 6 amp models. Each one was inspired by a celebrated American, British and European head or combo. Get sparkling clean tones, syrupy smooth drive tones, high-gain onslaughts, mid-range tones on the verge of breakup, and more with the tonal nuances of the modeled originals.

Start smart and dive deep with the unprecedented control of Line 6 Smart FX. 20 brilliant effects deliver unprecedented color, adjustability and routing options. Dig into the Smart Harmony, Pitch Glide, the 14-second Quick Loop, and more, and route each one pre or post for an extraordinary collection of tone-shaping tools. Plus, you get every guitarist’s required palette of colors including beautiful Delays, Mods, Reverbs and more. Tweak up to 6 effect parameters; use up to 4 effects simultaneously.

The signal from the Line 6 front-end flows into the Bogner-designed 12AX7 preamp to produce creamy, cascading distortions and enriched tube harmonics. The 6L6 power tubes drive the Celestion® Vintage 30 speakers in the three-quarter closed-back cabinet to provide unprecedented sonic impact, exceptional feel and tonal richness.

Line 6 FBV Shortboard MkII foot controller pairs perfectly with Spider Valve MkII 212 to offer out-of-the-box Volume/Wah, Pitch Glide control, preset control, Quick Loop control, and more.

I bought this amp lightly used from a dude on a popular auction site. I had used the previous model MK1 1x12" Spider Valve and I had been immensely happy with that amp. This new amp is a significant leap forward in tone, volume, editing capabilities and ease-of-use (provided you buy one of the pedals, I prefer the FBV ShortBoard).

When I plugged her in and set the model to Class A, turned the drive up to 85% and strummed that first chord, the amp gently took the electrical signal from my pickups, caressed it gently, shaping the tones into wisps of tonal joy and pleasure, as it passed the signal through the tubes and to the Celestion vintage 30 speakers, where the signal was transmuted into an airborne assault of gentle yet powerful aural bliss. Even when one has the testicular fortitude to attempt to draw every ounce of overdrive and distortion out of this amp, it never sounds bad. When the Insane model is selected and the drive pushed to 100%, the end result is a heavy yet pleasing inundation of sound and drive that sounds tremendously better than any "metal" effect I've heard thus far.

This amp is like a loyal Labrador, always willing to perform to it's best capability, desperately desiring to not only please you but to show you how much it cares for you by going above and beyond, yet when sleeping in bed with you, it takes up a bit more room than you prefer and halfway through the night you end up putting it back on the floor so you can sleep well. In the morning, you wake up and see it all alone, curled up in the corner and you feel bad for kicking it out of the bed.

Unless you're touring with a band and on stage every single night, this is the one and only amp you will need for the rest of your life. I got into line 6 products when i picked up a used POD on ebay. I figured if the tones sound this good without tubes in the picture, what will it sound like with the tubes? the answer is simple. They all sound amazing. On top of just plain sounding great, there is so much versatility with the effects and amp models. If for some wild reason you can't find a tone you like out of the 16 presets it comes loaded with, you can flip it to manual and adjust your settings however you like. Either way, hearing it wont be a problem with two of the best speakers on the market inside the cab. 90% of the killer amps made for the past couple decades have had the celestions in them including marshall cabs and the mesa cabs and of course this sweet little amp. The clean tones are pristine as for the distorted tones, my buddy had a Mesa half stack and after he heard me play out of this, he left band practice and went directly to guitar center and traded it for this amp. His reasoning being that the mesas need to be cranked to sound good. this thing has that exact mesa tone on it no matter where the master volume is, plus a bunch of other tones. The only amp i have considered purchasing past this is the orange thunderverb or rockerverb head. The reason i haven't done it is because i'm not touring the country, so spending upwards of two thousand dollars on something to play at the local vfw or basement scene doesn't make sense for me.
Now with a review like that why not 5 stars? Because the thing is fragile.

I bought 4 of these amps each one I took back because it sounded horrible!
BUT! Only after I Upgraded to "FIRMWARE 2.0" . Turns out that the 2.0 Firmware has a Major flaw when using the Hi-gain amp models.
. My understanding was that the amp models were changed on the 1.50 (and carried-over to the 2.0) update to give a better tone when played loud, but since most users are playing at a bedroom level (or direct, as you are), many people have complained they don't like the new tones (the complaints were mostly from combo owners and not HD owners, but that may be due to the fact that the HD owners tend to play LOUDER). #i recently updated my MkII HD100 head to firmware 2.0 and suddenly all the distorted setups sound extremely muffled and ugly, everything that is not tidily clean gets just unbearable to listen to (and that's not just because my playing sucks). this is true not just for presets but also for manual settings.

so i downgraded to 1.50, same result. i downgraded again to 1.17 which gave me my sweet sound back.

it is working just fine with 1,17

Played this in a store... Was shocked at how the volume went from zero to ear splitting with nothing in between. It is unplayable for normal band practice volumes in a regular sized room. Crazy.

I bought the 112 instead hoping HOPING HOPING that it would be quieter. It is. Its still VERY loud, but you can get it sounding good at normal band practice volume. You cant with the 212. Buy the 112. Its amazing.
