Book Description

May 1, 1999
Joey Panella is the son of Brooklyn's most feared loan shark -- a small time Mafioso -- but that's not what Joey wants to remain. He doesn't want to be a "wise guy." He's tired of beating people up for a living. He doesn't want to be a thief or a murderer. He doesn't want to get something for nothing.

Joey Panella believes in the American Dream. He believes that hard work, guts, and imagination can turn a beggar into a billionaire. And he wants to be that billionaire.

By selling cocaine.

Even though the local mafiosos, and his father, believe that selling drugs is beneath them. Even though he'll have to go up against Harlem Kingpins, New York Cops, Drug Enforcement Agents...and the Colombian Drug Cartel.

Even though it might cost him the only woman he loves.

But Joey Panella knows that across the Lines of Fire is everything he wants...and it will cost him everything he has to get it.

Every war has its heros and victims. On both sides.

Even the Drug War.

5.0 out of 5 stars like Hemingway, try Giovanello, November 22, 1999

This review is from: Lines of Fire (Paperback)
Guy's succinct, to the point, narratives, punctuated by an extrememely realistic, believable dialogue style, flesh out a story that can readily transport any serious reader to the early 70s world of the cocaine underculture just before and during the awful mockery of crack cocaine distribution and usage. With even a modicum of ability to "read between the lines" the average reader can enter the story of Joey Panella, hero, or infidel, and his harsh cutting edge life of love, strife, friendships, and ultimate pursuit of happiness. His is a story which transcends simple morality, while refusing to abandon the gutter from which it was spawned. Somehow, the story transcends the subject material, the characters rise above their station, and the plot takes on a life of its own. Kudos to the author, Gup P. Giovanello, and may he know we anticipate his next literary work as ambitious an undertaking as this reader has heard fleshed out orally in many years...he may yet overtake the famed Puzo in illustrating the Mafioso code to a naive yet curious world. Bravo! Now, please, producers, take note, bring on the film.
