Book Description

0974518603 978-0974518602 November 2003
Lingering Spirit is a moving experience—a captivating book that is filled with forlorn and abandoned homes, barns, and vehicles that have outlived their usefulness. As you turn each page, you become a living witness to a past that once defined a state. The farmsteads, general stores, churches, schools, and factories are a collective monument to the generations who lived out their lives in quiet dignity.

Once integral to everyday existence, these places and objects are now relics that lie dormant across the countryside. Often ignored, they still retain an energy—a part of the soul—of their makers and users. And, it is precisely this spirit that has been so successfully captured in this timeless book. Each sepia-toned, black-and-white image will emotionally connect you to those who have gone before, to their struggles as well as their hopes and dreams. With over 200 stunning photographs—all taken in south-central Indiana—Hoosier photographer John Bower has created a compelling visual journey, one that will never be forgotten.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Lingering Spirit, a visual treat...art that can be appreciated more and more the longer one studies the photographs." -- Vincennes Sun-Commercial

"The photos...convey a clear sense of what was. His careful use of tone is expressive and powerful." -- Indianapolis Star

"We predict Lingering Spirit will become one of the all-time great photographic essays about Indiana's history." -- Bloomington Herald Times

From the Publisher

Lingering Spirit is a record of our history, our collective life journey. As such, it includes forgotten and abandoned houses, barns, and vehicles that have outlived their usefulness. Although usually ignored, these remarkable relics do retain an energy--a part of the soul--of their makers and users. Now the power of these structures and posessions has been captured in powerful, expressive black-&-white photography.

Lingering Spirit contains beautiful photographs and a Preface by John Bower, the photographer, describing how the project came into being. All the images are reproduced in beautiful duotones with a slight brown tint. In order to keep this project to a manageable size, all the photos in Lingering Spirit were taken in 10 Indiana counties. However, quite a few of the scenes are reminiscent of locals in many of Indiana's 92 counties. But you don't need to be an Indiana native to appreciate this book, any more than you need to be French to appreciate images of Paris.

The production of this book was funded, in part, by an Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, with funds from the Indiana General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Wonderful Book, January 26, 2006

This review is from: Lingering Spirit: A Photographic Tribute to Indiana's Fading, Forlorn, and Forgotten Places (Paperback)
This is a great book for anyone who has ever lived on a farm or visited grandma or an uncle on their farm as a child. While a sad reminder that we don't always value our heritage, the photographer really captures the spirit of abandoned buildings across southern Indiana. I flipped through this book very quickly the first time and then have gone back and studied the photos one or two at a time. He doesn't clutter up the presentation with a lot of words but takes a moment here and there to give some information that would add something significant. This is one we'll keep in the family library.
