Excellent Recording. But ..., November 18, 2010
This review is from: Lingua Latina: Latine Audio (Audio CD ONLY) Chapters 1-10 only from "Familia Romana" (Pt. 1) (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD recently to accompany the Linqua Latina Pars I: Familia Romana
This is a very good quality recording. The voice is clear and easy to hear. It gives me real hope of eventually learning to speak Latin.
To my untutored ear, this sounds like restored pronunciation. In other words, it sounds like what we think Latin of the 1st century AD sounded like when spoken by an educated person.
But...there is a problem. It is recorded for straight listening only. There are no pauses to allow for repetition by the student. And the recording is at speed. In fact it was spoken so rapidly that it allows no time for thought by the student if some question comes up concerning what has just been heard. Even the slightest distraction wondering about the way a word was pronounced and you are immediately lost in the recording.
This could be so easily fixed with a little attention by a sound engineer. Pauses could easily be inserted into the sound file. Sentences could be repeated once or twice to allow the student to practice saying the Latin words and phrases. Difficult words could be repeated several times.
It is hard to understand why this, or something like it, was not done. It is especially difficult to understand in light of the excellent example of the Pimsleur series which takes such great care to assure that the student learns to speak properly. It is a pity that the publishers of the Pimsleur series have not seen fit to issue lessons in Latin.
The publisher should issue a new edition of this disc with a re-engineered file added as an option for students who want to be able to speak Latin and are concerned with their accent.

Helpful Pronunciation Guide, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Lingua Latina: Latine Audio (Audio CD ONLY) Chapters 1-10 only from "Familia Romana" (Pt. 1) (Audio CD)
My local library had some books, "Using Latin" that I found were very helpful in giving me a jump start at my autodidactic efforts at learning to read Latin. Can't say that I am where I want to be with that now, but it has given me the confidence to try some harder projects. I recommend the books also. I have tried to teach myself Latin in the past from books, and it isn't as easy as grabbing Pimsleur programs and listening in the car. But you soon run into another problem even with these helpful books. You don't know how to pronounce the words. You have a rough idea, but should you ever have to or want to join a conversation about the Latin text you just read(And if you are reading Latin, you will find someone to talk Latin with) you might find yourself a bit embarrassed because you didn't go to the same Harvard prep-school they did. This little program is of great help fixing that problem for you.
Also, just listening to it on its own in the car, you will find yourself increasing your Latin abilities. Dead language as Latin is, and this is the third dead language I have tackled, you still learn better the more senses you bring into the endeavor. Books and pictures work on vision, and possible touch. This will give you the auditory note to the lessons that you need. I highly recommend this if you want to learn Latin on your own. Or even if you are just struggling along in Latin at that Harvard prep-school.
