Does work with Windows 7 x64,

I gave it 4 stars due to it being so not intuitive to set up. It will work bidirectionally with windows 7 x64, but you have to search the linksys forums to find out how. You must upgrade the firmware from the linksys site and download the new drivers. Then you need only to run the setup program found in the utilities folder. Follow the prompts and you will be done in 5 minutes. It took me several days to figure this out. Now it works perfectly.

I ordered two of these print servers, one for home, one for the office. They both work fine. The set-up is nearly idiot-proof. The included CD gives step by step instructions on setting the server up.
My only complaint is that the server insists on being the default printer and it will not allow another printer to be default without manually changing settings. On reboot the print server returns back to being default.

I purchased the print server after reading various reviews on Amazon. The retailer should mention (on this site) that the software included in the box will not work with Win Vista/Win 7. I installed the device on my gateway desktop (Win Vista 64-bit) but not without some effort. I chatted online with Tech Support which is apparently outsourced to India. Technician was quick to point out that the device will not work with Win Vista 64-bit, however there are drivers on Linksys site for Vista 32-bit. After researching the forums, I printed out detailed instructions on setup in my Win Vista environment. Once the gateway computer was set up, the remaining pcs were updated with the device/printer by way of adding new printer/IP address (Control Panel). My first router was a Linksys model and I had forgotten how much of a pain in the rear both the equipment and technical support had been. Save yourself some trouble. If you purchase the device, go the the forums, do not call technical support. The print server now works as expected. The gateway can sleep and other pcs continue to share the printer. Problem solved.

Bought for an HP4200. I gave the product 4 stars because it has only been a week of use. I received this in a timely manner. It came in really good shape cannot tell it's refurbished. Pc with XP easy install, laptop with vista not so easy but doable (read below). Contacted manufaturer and told me the warranty had expired and they could no longer help me for free over the phone that I had to call their 800..number and they will charge me to guide me on this product.....Did some research and came to find out all the info you need is in their website on ther forum section. Google has no info on this product. !!!!Do not call and pay, per the other members on the forum they are of no help!!! Like I said before all (at least for me) the info you need to hook up this product to your vista or xp (pc/laptop)is in the Linksys forum, you have to spend some time loooking for the right answer because this depends of the problem you are having. Overall is working very good, printing takes a bit longer that usual but no need for cables, I can take that trade. I use this for personal use with both of my computers. It seems this itme is not yet compatible with Windows 7. Liksys is aparently working on this and will release and update, don't know when. Just though I share this. Will update as time goes by.

At first it was not working and the computer did not pick up its signal. After I installed the firmware update it worked like a charm. the wizard is also a very helpful tool to get you hooked up in no time.

Although we had some compatibility issues with Windows 7, those were fairly easily resolved, and this wireless print server has proved to be exactly what we were looking for. Now we don't to carry one of our laptops from another room and plug the printer into it to print.

Works with Windows 7 and Mac,

With a little trouble and trial-and-error, I have the device working properly with Windows 7 and Mac computers (and an HP 1320 printer). A firmware upgrade was necessary, but the the device setup software that came with the unit worked fine.
The advice from the other reviewers was very helpful, so here are two more tips that might help someone else: (1) To determine the print server's IP address, press its reset button while it's connected to the printer. Hold it in for a second. You'll get a nice printout of the network information. (2) Use a static IP address, as you'll avoid problems later. Here's an easy way. First, get everything up and running without worrying about it. When you run the device software setup, just let it obtain the IP automatically. Then go back later and change the settings via the online tool -- To get to that, all you have to do is type the print server's IP address in your web browser's location bar. (You'll login using the password you chose during the device setup. Leave the username blank). Then go to the Protocol tab and enter the info obtained in Tip 1. That's it. Other than the setup hassle, this device works well and is a nice value.

Okay, it wasn't easy to install the way the manufacturer recommended, but I've been in the industry for a few decades, so it didn't take much to figure out the one hurdle wasn't really much of one.
First, set up the WPSM54G as directed using the supplied software. Make sure you change the admin username and password. Also, enter the information to get to your wireless router. Second, check your router's configuration to determine what the IP address is for the WPSM54G. This is usually easy do to by bringing up the web interface to your router and looking for network devices. Third, SKIP THE DESKTOP SOFTWARE INSTALLATION!!! Fourth, manually add a network printer using the IP address you determined to be the WPSM54G. Fifth, print to your heart's content. I'm extremely happy with my WPSM54G and hope this helps those that are less experienced. |
