It's a non managed switch, so not really much to say about set up.
Plug in your Ethernet cables, plug in the switch. So simple a non-techie significant other could do it.
I was using a four port switch but with the addition of a networked TV, blueray player, apple tv... i was running out of available ports.
I ordered this and received the usual super fast shipping from Amazon. Packaging was excellent.
From the time I unpacked the switch to the time i was done (including moving the old 4 port switch over to the home theater area and plugging in the apple tv to stop using wireless) it took 5 minutes.
Yes there are cheaper switches out there, but since this switch is in a semi-visible area I wanted something that looked a little nicer. Having it come from Cisco is just an added bonus.

If you're looking for an 8 port switch, I would recommend the SE2800.

I don't really get into configuring these things. I just wanted it to work and it did so right out of the box. I just plugged in the power and the ethernet cables without any additional thinking. It appears to know which cable is the uplink and takes care of everything automatically. My only complaint is that the activity status lights are on the back where the cables are. Having the blinking lights on the front would deliver more value to the user.

-No setup... just plug in the wires...
-Stylish (matches the 4200 series router).

-Runs hot... make sure you have adequate ventilation if installing in a cabinet
-Wish it would have some sort of spacers so that it attaches to the 4200 router while providing the proper ventilation

The unit worked fine for two months then failed. Unconnected ports began blinking continuously bringing down the entire network. Disconnected everything, power off for > 5 minutes, plug in unit alone (no Ethernet connected), same 3 ports begin blinking.

After spending 65 minutes on the phone, off-shore customer support and tech support were unable or unwilling to generate case number so that I could obtain RMA for warranty return. Sure, the switch is inexpensive, but a warranty that cannot be executed is as worthless as a defective switch.

My home office has an HP color printer, Brother Laser printer, 2 high performance desktops and a security system, all which I have opted to connect with Cat-5 cables (faster connection, slightly more security, and reduced WiFi BW usage). Consequently, a 4-port switch isn't quite enough to meet my personal requirements. I have bought several Linksys products in the past and have been satisfied and as a result, I continue to purchase Linksys/Cisco (although D-Link and Netgear seems to get excellent reviews).

The most annoying aspect of setting up the switch was locating an AC socket that would accept the awkwardly shaped transformer. Other than that, setup time was predicated on how fast I could hook up the cables. Because of the ease-of-setup, low price, and fast delivery, I am going to rate the product a "5-star".

Order was serviced by Amazon and I have observed that "Amazon Prime" membership seems to get me priority shipping (2-day) and I must say I am very much appreciating the service.

I just replaced my old router, with this SE 1500 switch a week ago (Dated 2011 on the box), with no problems. There are five ports. I plugged in the ethernet cable from my modem in port 5 and used the other 4 ports for my computers (2 ports are active now - See picture - Blue is from modem).

I can access the internet with both computers at the same time. I have Time Warner Cable, with a strong signal. I am not sure, but I expect my cable company provides two IP addresses. My Yahoo research after buying this indicates a switch is not generally used (nor works) to access the internet with two computers and a router is needed, unless two IP addresses are provided by the internet provider (I can not confirm or deny this information - I found it on Yahoo) - Seems some good luck worked in my favor.

NOTE: I purchased mine at the local Walmart for the same price -(90 day return policy - no questions) - They have it on line too.

The switch seems to know that I have used port 5 from the modem and takes care of the rest, since it does not have a titled in port for the modem.

This switch also allows two different computer VPN sites for work to log on and operate - My old router was out-dated and the VPN on one computer would not link to my company site - but I could access the internet, without logging on the VPN. (Oddly the other computer would log on via VPN, but a different company - I was told it was a security issue with the old router) Now both computers will log on the two different company VPNs with the SE1500.

This just saved me about $500/year, since I do not need to pay for a second cable company modem.

I am so glad this is available. I did not want to go wireless.

Note: There are no ethernet lights on the back ports for this model. - The ethernet lights blink via the front of the box through the front vents and are turned on/off via the switch on the back.

I have no over-heating problems. The unit is slightly lifted off the table by the cables in the back.

Update - 5/26/12- So far so good - No major problems with this product. Both computers are running strong on a daily basis over the internet and company VPNs. A few times I did get a no cable or low signal warning, but did a reboot of the modem, switch and computer and all was fine - Not sure if it was the switch or modem. When I called the cable company, they told me my modem showed it was off line, so I think it may have been the modem.....

NOTE: It seems that Amazon has crossed over reviews of several models SE 1500, SE 2500, etc., which may be confusing to the reader. This review is for the SE 1500

Hope this helps, j.

I have installed three of these in various points in my house. It comes in handy when you have one ethernet port coming out of the wall and many things that require internet connectivity. My latest application was to add this to my family room because I needed to hookup and apple TV, Tivo, Chromecast and a Sony receiver. Works beautifully and never have any issues with internet connections on any of the devices.

As almost everyone has said, works fine, easy install, just plug it in. Only compaint is there are no front or top port lights, which is nice for troubleshooting. And on the main Amazon page for this product, Amazon has combined the 5 and 8 port models on one page with some user pictures. There is a pic of the 5-port model and the user said the port lights can be turned on and off and they show through the front grill. I thought that was perfect! Until I installed the 8-port model and the lights do not show through the front on this model and are all in the back. Apparently only the 5-port model offers this feature which is too bad.

This has been working great in a home environment. Network has 4 network cameras, a NAS with plenty of streaming stuff, 4 PC's, 2 cell phones... you get the picture. Using it with lots of network traffic and no bottlenecks so far. ;)

If you use this with the TP-Link Micro wireless router, it won't keep up a connection consistent enough for gaming (from Pokemon X/Y to Clash of Clans). Running my ethernet connection directly into the wireless router makes these things work, so I know it must be the switch. However, my desktop, running off of a different cable from this switch, seems to stay on just fine. So it may be something about how they interact.
