Linksys and Belkin, who now owns Linksys, have some decent tools in their arsenal. One of them however is not the ability to take complicated things and make them easy.
The first thing that they have you do is to plug in the device and let it warm up. Once that is done it will broadcast a generic SSID with no encryption, this will only be true until you have completed the setup process so don’t worry. Once you do the setup, which took about 5 minutes with a Galaxy Tab 3 the system is set up in the most basic mode. This mode simply duplicates your current network name and passcode encryption on both the 2.4 and 5.0 Ghtz frequency.
Now is where the easy part ends. In a very small section of the manual (that nothing directs you to look at) there are instructions of how to log into and access the extender. You can either do this by plugging directly into the extender or by the wireless signal. You really must do this if you don’t have a very secure location. Once you’ve logged into the device you can change the password on the device from the factory installed password which is the same as most devices, “password”. Once you have changed this it should alleviate anymore security concerns.
Now you need to update the firmware, this will make sure your device works properly and has the latest fix for any bugs that are being reported. Since this model is the newest, this is the time in its production line that it will be most crucial. Now other devices require you to simply press a button on the web page and it will search for the most up to date firmware version, download it and then install if for you. Linksys isn’t that nice.

This extender is really great, the only problem is the set up process. It's a nightmare to get working, but once you get it up and running its incredible. I am really great with technology, thought the setup would be a breeze, but had to talk to technical support who knew less than I did about the set up issue. I would give it one more star, but if someone who does not know how to set up one of these extenders tries and fails I feel that really is a big part of making or breaking someone's expectations of the product.

The Good:
+ Increases Signal Strength
+ Music Streaming

The Bad:
- Setup from Tablet Failed
- Decreased Network Speed
- Poor Documentation
- Creates Security Vulnerabilities

Overall: While the Linksys RE6500 Range Extender provides the services advertised, the downsides prevent me from recommended it for general usage.

Setup: The instructions that come with the Linksys RE6500 Range Extender are terse to say the least. I wanted to verify how easy the setup really was, and I tried using my tablet. I got as far as connecting to my router, and the RE6500 freaked out. I was unable to reach it again, and I had to power cycle it to continue. I switched to my laptop, and things worked as advertised.

Documentation: While the initial setup worked as advertised, Linksys provides you with no additional information. Nothing on the box or the product page give any indication how music streaming works. Even the product information page on Linksys’s website is void of information. I had to dig through support before I found the user manual. While I agree with keeping this online, Linksys should have at least provided the URL on their one-sheet instructions.

Performance: I used a wi-fi analyzer to check my connectivity before and after setting up the RE6500 in my living room. I had about 60-65% signal strength prior to setup, and I got 75-80% afterward. I was within 10 feet of the RE6500, and I had a clear line of sight to it. Perhaps my expectations are too high, but I would have expected closer to 85-90%. I had to get within two feet to achieve this. The real downside was that my network speed decreased from 144 MB/s before to 104 MB/s after. I find this unacceptable.

I will never buy something from Linksys again. Terrible service, terribly frustrating to even attempt to install and ridiculous requirements to do so.

I bought another unit and it was up and going in 5 minutes. Let me give you an example of how this worked:

Linksys steps:

1) Instructions include software that has to be installed from a computer. I used the CD on my PC but then it says you have to have a wireless connection with the PC to make it work.

2) Switched to my iMac and tried with the wireless. Couldn't find the extender. Okay. Manual installation it is.

3) Turned on my Mac Book Pro. Plugged it directly into the unit and gave it a try. I was able to connect to the device. It crashed 4 times and I had to factory reset but I finally got it to TRY to connect to my wireless. Crashed when it was supposed to be rebooting. Maybe it hates Macs.

4) I tried it on a PC with Windows 7. Same BS. The unit would simply NOT work. Support time.

5) Contacted support. Their chat crashed 2 times. I decided that it was too much trouble and if it ever did connect, heaven help me if I could get it RE connected if there was a problem.

Amped Unit:

1) Took back the Linksys and bought an Amped after finding some good reviews.

2) Instructions state: plug it in where you want it. Use your Tablet or Wireless Laptop to connect to it with a URL.

3) I connected with my iPad, had it scan for my wireless router. It found it and after I put in my password, I had to wait for a 140 second countdown.

4) Countdown ended and I had a connection. Everything worked fine.

To Linksys: your garbage is overly complicated and totally unnecessary.

To Amped: Great product and thank you for having it.

Stay away from Linksys people. It's just not worth your frustration.
