Wireless-AC for Faster Speed and Reliability

Upgrade your wireless home network and enjoy significantly faster speeds than conventional wireless-N using the AC1200 Dual-Band Smart Wi-Fi Router from Linksys. Using wireless-AC technology, this router delivers speeds up to AC1200 Mbps (N300 + AC867). Wireless-AC offers gigabit Wi-Fi speeds that allow video and music files to stream and sync more quickly, allowing you to stream Netflix content to your HDTV while family members simultaneously download movies on a separate device or play online games–without waiting for content to buffer. The AC1200 Smart Wi-Fi Router is outfitted with a USB 3.0 port and four gigabit ports that let you connect multiple devices, allowing you to quickly print, share, and store content across your network.

Beamforming Creates Stronger, Faster Connections

The Linksys AC1200 Smart Wi-Fi router features beamforming, an innovative technology that optimizes the wireless signal and strengthens communication between specific devices and the router. Beamforming enables the router to identify and connect directly with other devices, rather than simply sending out wireless signals in a general direction. This results in faster network speeds, better wireless range, and reduced interference from other devices. It also helps extend the battery life of connected devices and reduce their power consumption because data is transferred more quickly.

Manage Your Home Network Remotely with Linksys Smart Wi-Fi

With Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, you can remotely access and control your home network anytime, using your smartphone, tablet, or computer. For example, you can set parental controls to restrict Internet access during certain times of the day and create unique, secure Wi-Fi passwords for your guests. You can also monitor activity on your home network, add new devices, and check upload and download speeds. In addition, Linksys Smart Wi-Fi allows you to prioritize which devices on your network receive the most bandwidth to reduce lag times and buffering when you're streaming HD media or gaming. Your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account also gives you access to apps that provide additional ways to control and interact with your home Wi-Fi network. Block the Bad Stuff lets you add one of three levels of protective filtering to help safeguard your wireless network. Device Monitr allows you to monitor game consoles, tablet computers, and other devices, while NetProofer lets you restrict access to certain websites.

Upgrade Your Devices to Enjoy the Full Benefits of Wireless-AC

Using Linksys's family of wireless-AC peripherals, you can take full advantage of the improved speed and stability of wireless-AC. Linksys Universal Media Connector lets you connect wired devices such as game consoles and smart TVs to your Wi-Fi network and stream HD or even 3D HD video content. The connector operates on the 5 GHz band, resulting in less interference and a clearer signal. Additionally, the Linksys Dual Band AC1200 Wireless 3.0 Adapter (WUSB6300) enables you to upgrade your laptop or desktop computer to fully benefit from the faster speeds of wireless-AC technology to stream high-definition video or enjoy high-speed gaming.

This router keeps loosing it's firmware update, and every day or two, it drops the internet connection and needs to be rebooted to get the internet to come back up.

Style Name: AC1750 Verified Purchase
Summary: A great router if you need one now, and are looking to futureproof your setup; and the Cloud services are optional (after the initial setup)

My previous router: DIR-655 for about 5 years.

Review: My last router stopped working after many years of great service. I was in a pickle: do I buy an 'n' router, the standard created over 5 years ago (ancient by computer standards), or do I get the newer (and untested) 'AC' standard for more $$?

What convinced me was the reviews for the EA4500 v2. My thinking was, if this thing is basically the EA4500 with support for the new wireless standard, then why not pay an extra 40$ for the increase in technology? I assumed it would not be faster since I was still using g/n, but as it turns out, this thing smokes my old router (see speeds below).

The big selling point that Linksys tries to push is the 'App' feature. I'll put it to you like this: have you ever wanted to check your home internet status while you were, say, on business in another country? Or did you ever think, 'geeze, i forgot to change the parental settings!' and wanted to up the porn filter at home from your office?

Yeah, me neither.

Routers to me are like the cement foundation of your home: I appreciate they might be the most critical part of the house, but hopefully I'll never have to bother with them. A bad router (or cement job) is one that requires attention after the initial setup. Hopefully the first and last time I looked at my EA6500 router screen was a few days ago when i took it out of the box.

Basically, the programs ('Apps') that are accessed via registering for their Cloud service (free) is an attempt to be more Macintosh, which the kids find trendy these days.

Original Review from September 26, 2012:
Bought two EA6500s to replace two EA4500s. One for DHCP, one for non-DHCP to extend wireless - yes, could have bought bridge instead of second EAxxxx, but prefer matched hardware for admin purposes. No speed advantage over EA4500, since none of my installed hardware has latest high-speed wireless hardware standard. Second USB is nice, but not critical. Some other feature of near-field single tap to connect seems nice, but appears limited to cell phones with some app (have not tried, easier to just connect than download and install app). Biggest EA6500 problem was latest firmware (1.1.27.141816). Suspect a problem with firmware for case of non-DHCP (192.168.1.2) use, as EA6500 was error-free after factory reset, but displays nuisance pop-up message "! Unexpected Error" after admin login to a non-DHCP configured EA6500 using 192.168.1.2 for router access, after which everything seems somewhat normal. Linksys support was of little help, advised to reset to factory setting (which is old firmware version) after spending nearly 3 hours on phone with them. Risk of buying latest technology... it may have bugs (pretty convinced latest firmware is cause of "! Unexpected Error"). Bottom line, if you are only using one EA6500, you should be fine with this product.

We recently released a firmware to address the issue you described. Go to: http://kb.linksys.com/26633 for step-by-step instructions or feel free to use the router's firmware update function. If you would like personal assistance, please call our support line at (800) 326-7114. Note: if you have auto update turned on, your firmware may already be updated.

This procedure is not necessary for newly purchased products because the router will be automatically updated to the latest firmware upon installation (using the setup CD).

Thanks,

I bought this router impulsively without doing much research, this is something I never do but did for some reason, after realizing my mistake I read some mixed reviews here on amazon and also on Newegg. I was scared I would get it and have it restart a bunch or drop single. So I researched a few other websites for reviews and they all said the same thing. “Update your firmware”! I am an IT professional and I must say this router impressed me. I did a speed test directly connect to my modem (without the router) and got speeds around 130mbs download and 20mbs uploading on average over 10 test. I did the same tests after installing the router and the speeds were the same!

That being said MAKE SURE you update the Firmware to the router. The CD it comes with does this for you so use it! The new firmware updates took care of the issues the router formally had making it one of the leading routers available to you! I run two computer both raid on wow at the same time with no lag issues what so ever! A++

The setup was easy, and the CD walks you through it, the web interface the router use is clean and easy to use!

I hope this review helps you make a decision on to buy or not. It is a great product, but its not the only option there are many great top end routers right now and only you can decide what you want to spend your money on!

We purchased this router for a medium size office, looking for a dual band router to cover a wide range of devices. I was especially interested in the "Smart WiFi" remote management capability. The router was indeed very easy to setup and manage via the Linksys website. However, the performance in the 2.4 Ghz band is horrible. We are getting approximately 1/2 the speed compared to our other 2.4 Ghz router, even when the signal strength is excellent and issues such as interference are ruled out.

I would only recommend this router if you are exclusively connecting devices capable of 5Ghz band connections. The professional reviews that indicate "disappointing" 2.4Ghz connections actually under-estimate the performance issues. We are likely going to return this router for one that provides better performance.

Update!

After a year, the 2.4Ghz band has become effectively useless. The speed and range is absolutely terrible. Clearly there is an antennae issue, or a design flaw that Linksys should acknowledge and support. However, their support department told me that I'm outside the 90 day complimentary support window and have to pay for any assistance. So I have to pay to have them confirm that there's a warranty issue?

Do not buy this router unless all of your devices are on the 5Ghz bandwidth (using the Wireless-AC standard).
