Book Description

9810229402 978-9810229405 January 2002
Linus Pauling wrote a series of over 800 scientific papers spanning a wide range of fields, some of which he himself initiated. This is the second volume in a set of two detailing some of his most important writings in the fields of quantum mechanics, chemical bonding (covalent, ionic, metallic, and hydrogen bonding), molecular rotation and entropy, protein structure, hemoglobin, molecular disease, molecular evolution, the antibody mechanism, the molecular basis of anesthesia, orthomolecular medicine, radiation chemistry/biology, and nuclear structure. Through these papers the reader gets a fresh, unfiltered view of the genius of Pauling's many contributions to chemistry, chemical physics, molecular biology, and molecular medicine.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...most significant and influential scientific papers is testimony to the extraordinary contributions among the greatest 20th century scientists." -- Ahmed H Zewail, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1999

About the Author

Considered to be the most influential chemist of the 20th century, Linus Pauling (1901-1994) led the way in developing the modern concepts of chemical bonding and their fruitful application to all aspects of chemistry and then to biology and medicine. His ideas have fundamentally transformed the way chemistry is formulated as a science and taught, and have opened up completely new fields that have grown to immense importance, such as molecular biology and molecular disease. For this pioncering work he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954, and he received countless other prizes, medals, awards, honorary degrees, etc. In 1963 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his successful efforts, based on scientific principles of radiation biology, to halt the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere. Pauling is the only person to have received two unshared Nobel Prizes.

This review is from: Linus Pauling: Selected Scientific Papers : Biomolecular Sciences (World Scientific Series in 20th Century Chemistry) (Hardcover)
Linus Pauling is certainly one of the most brilliant people of the past 100 years. It is well worth reading his original words, not some misinterpreted restatement by someone else. Much of this material is extremely technical and may not be understood by the average reader.

In particular I would highly recommend the articles that explain the value of taking supplemental vitamin C and how much to take. Great research! Great thinking!

First Sentence:
In the realm of biology, into which he began to venture in the late 1930's, Linus Pauling came firmly to the conviction that life's complex processes could be understood as straight-forward consequences of chemical forces and structures. Read the first page
