You can really distinguish yourself from the field of consultants by earning your Sair Linux & GNU Certified Professional (LCP) rating. The first step down that road (for most people, anyway) is the installation and configuration exam (3X0-103), which tests your ability to convert a bare-metal machine to one running any of several Linux distributions configured according to requirements. Combined with a machine or two and some time to experiment with them, Installation & Configuration, Sair Linux and GNU Certification Level 1 ought to do the trick for Linux novices who need to learn about Linux variants and some of the tools they run.

Tobin Maginnis breaks from test-prep conventions by making this book remarkably text-heavy, and his iconoclasm pays off for the certification candidate. The text is strong, generally readable, and encourages you to experiment with the concepts and features you have to understand to pass the test. Where it's appropriate, Maginnis does provide tables that list command options and other details, but his approach is usually more like that of a tour guide than a reference librarian. You may wish for more practice exam questions--the 100 or so that appear in the back don't come with explanations (and they're numbered strangely, to boot). Regardless, this book deserves praise for its evenhanded treatment of the top Linux distributions and emphasis on the features they have in common. --David Wall

I'll admit, I'm a beginning Linux user. And with that in mind, any other beginning Linux users should be aware that this book alone will not help you pass the exam. The problem can't be confined to the book itself. Both the book and the exam want you have both the book knowledge and experience to pass the exam. While this is an admirable approach, it's unpractical. Everyone's experience with Linux will be different, so the end result is that you are expected to take an exam containing questions that you may have no practical way of knowing the answer to.

As the reader of this has probably guessed, I did not pass the exam. I came four questions shy of passing. I'm hopeful that my continued usage of Linux, and restudying books like "Linux for Dummies" will help me with my second attempt. But I can't help but feel a little miffed that I'm out $99.

The book gave me a good overview of the basics of installation of Linux and its configurations and covers the topics needed for the certification exams. I hope that with the help of this book, it will not be hard to pass the exams. I like its coverage of the various Linux distributions.. very helpful !

I think it is good if you already have some experince or had read another books about Linux. It is a good overview and the practice questions help to understand the wording of the exam. I recommend you read Linux Unleashed first and then review this study guide. You must install and play with Linux if you are a newbie. Order the Linux Power Pack, it comes with 9 distributions and some other goodies.

I love this certification becasue it test you about Linux and not about a particular distribution.
