4.0 out of 5 stars Good Certification
The book gave me a good overview of the basics of installation of Linux and its configurations and covers the topics needed for the certification exams. I hope that with the help of this book, it will not be hard to pass the exams. I like its coverage of the various Linux distributions.. very helpful !

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book, but beware the exam...
I'll admit, I'm a beginning Linux user. And with that in mind, any other beginning Linux users should be aware that this book alone will not help you pass the exam. The problem can't be confined to the book itself. Both the book and the exam want you have both the book knowledge and experience to pass the exam. 3.0 out of 5 stars A good book, but beware the exam..., March 1, 2000

I'll admit, I'm a beginning Linux user. And with that in mind, any other beginning Linux users should be aware that this book alone will not help you pass the exam. The problem can't be confined to the book itself. Both the book and the exam want you have both the book knowledge and experience to pass the exam. While this is an admirable approach, it's unpractical. Everyone's experience with Linux will be different, so the end result is that you are expected to take an exam containing questions that you may have no practical way of knowing the answer to.

As the reader of this has probably guessed, I did not pass the exam. I came four questions shy of passing. I'm hopeful that my continued usage of Linux, and restudying books like "Linux for Dummies" will help me with my second attempt. But I can't help but feel a little miffed that I'm out $99.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good to review the exam objetives, January 23, 2000
This review is from: Sair Linux and GNU Certification Level 1, Installation and Configuration (Paperback)
I think it is good if you already have some experince or had read another books about Linux. It is a good overview and the practice questions help to understand the wording of the exam. I recommend you read Linux Unleashed first and then review this study guide. You must install and play with Linux if you are a newbie. Order the Linux Power Pack, it comes with 9 distributions and some other goodies.

I love this certification becasue it test you about Linux and not about a particular distribution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good REVIEW Book, November 10, 2000

This book does a good job covering topics the SAIR Installation and Configuration knowledge matrix. It is by no means your only source for information, though. You need some experience with Linux AND have other sources of reference, like linuxdoc.org to pass the 3x101 exam. If you're new to linux don't expect one book to bring you up to speed. Read as many books as you can and USE LINUX!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for study purposes!, April 16, 2000

This book is good for what it was intended to do, and that is give insight as to what may be on the exam. If you are new to Linux, I would suggest you get Running Linux by Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman. It is intended for the new linux user and will help out a lot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good study guide, May 2, 2000
This review is from: Sair Linux and GNU Certification Level 1, Installation and Configuration (Paperback)
This book was a very good study guide, however I would not recommend taking the test without some hands on experience. The practice test in the back of the book was especially helpful for preparing for the exam. I passed the exam on the first try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book, April 24, 2000

I found this book to be of great help, but not particularly in the designated area. While the example questions and overview is definitely nice if you are heading in to take your exam, it's only a supplement to real world experience.

What I found most helpful was the trouble shooting and overall installation guide for multiple distros. I wish I would have had this book back on my first or second install. It would have saved me hours of searching for troubleshooting on the net.

Worth the price if you are a beginner or need that boost of confidence.

1.0 out of 5 stars You WILL fail if this is the only book you use, August 9, 2000

I purchased this book to prep for the Installation and Config Exam. Bad idea. At least half the questions on the test were not even remotely covered in the book. As stated in the title you must use other study materials or you WILL fail.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed, March 1, 2001
By
This review is from: Sair Linux and GNU Certification Level 1, Installation and Configuration (Paperback)
I was expecting a lot more from this book.

The book consists of a slew of sales literature on the various distributions, a practice exam of questionable quality, and a list of definitions that can be found in at least 100 places along with some VERY BASIC Linux tasks. Nothing is covered in depth.

The redeeming parts of this book (thus two stars) are the sections on PC architechure, video modes, and troubleshooting.

At best, it's over-priced ...
