Techie info that actually seducess the reader!,
This review is from: Linux Complete (Paperback)
When began looking for Linux OS systems information I expected to be bogged down in the same dull witted text-book writing style I was used to reading in college. This book actually seduces the reader with usefull information and online references that pick up where the authors leave off. I have to force myself to put it down. The seemless flow of usefull information that I rarely gleen from technicians would answer questions as I thought them up. This is a bible of answers to the questions technicians I've spoken to try not to answer.

It's not what it claims to be.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Linux Complete (Paperback)
It claims to be the COMPLETE contents of the Linux Documentation Project. Then in the fine print it says it has the Essentials. It's not complete, and it is lacking the essentials, for example, it has almost nothing on DNS, Sendmail, Apache, or SAMBA. I bought it precisely to have a nice hardcopy of the HOWTOs. I regret the purchase.

A compilation of How-To's with a very weak index.,
This review is from: Linux Complete (Paperback)
If you need a collection of How-To's and you don't want to print them off the net, this book is worth the price. Just don't plan to make it the center of your reference library. Its index is far too weak to serve that purpose.

A good book for a great price,

It's currently the best Linux reference book on the market and it's no doubt worth its price. I recommend it everyone working with Linux regardless your level and experience. But dont be cheated with the word COMPLETE. Of course it is NOT complete and you'll still need other books.

This review is from: Linux Complete (Paperback)
Linux Complete is a great reference. I am impressed how there is a small general idea for the chapter, and then it goes into detail about any situation you could ever run into. This book is not for beginners or computer illiterate people, but neither is Linux.

Hmm...,

This review is from: Linux Complete (Paperback)
This book is great if you don't feel like searching through the HOW-TO's online. Although some of them are very out of date. The online HOW-TO's are really an user's best bet to getting the current information. New Linux users should not buy this book thinking that it can substitute as a general 'getting started' reference and installation manual. It does contain generic instructions on installation, X, GNOME, and KDE. I can't really say it was a waste of money, however for the absolute Linux newbie, I'd recomend using the book or docs that came with your distrobution. Most distrobutions today come with a book of some sort, if you buy the official CD set, that is. Running Linux, and Linux in a Nutshell are probably better buys, though you pay for it in price.

Weakly indexed excellent source of information,

I basically bought this book because I was tired of scrolling through the pages of HOWTO documents, which I think have tons of useful and time-proven techniques to solve problems related to Linux. A better index could have done this book an excellent one. There is an extensive command reference at the end but finding a command is not that easy. If you basically want a desktop reference I would recommend the O'Reilly's Linux in a Nutshell which is thumbindexed thus letting you access the information you want in no time.

Why bother have a paper printed version of How-TOs ?,
By
This review is from: Linux Complete (Paperback)
I thought, what so complete about this book ? Well, it is only a paper version of "some" (not the complete) How-TOs...... Plus, it is not the latest version of the How-Tos....
