Great sysadmin book for Linux and Unix,
By Kevin Blackwell (krblack@club-internet.fr) (Paris, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Linux System Administration (The Landmark Series) (Paperback)
Linux System Administration showed me how what we had been doing was wrong. Since configuring our systems as suggested in the book, our network has run without a hitch. This book was hard to put down. It is an easy to read yet technical explanation of how to do system administration. It is not a rehash of man pages, but rather an explanation of how to solve real-world problems and where to look for more detailed technical information.

Not for technical people,
This review is from: Linux System Administration (The Landmark Series) (Paperback)
This book is not for technical people who are eager to learn Linux. It justs give brief information on Linux, something you may have already read a thousand time in the introductions of Linux documents. It is definitely not in depth enough to teach you how to administrate a Linux server.

More managerial than Technical,
This review is from: Linux System Administration (The Landmark Series) (Paperback)
After read this book book, I found many managerial strategy that we need to apply on administering system (Not just LINUX). I got many idea on administering system from this book and applied it (also for NT). I think this book is good for someone who want to do system administrator job. For more technical information you still need to read Linux Howto and other references.

Not for dummies !,
This review is from: Linux System Administration (The Landmark Series) (Paperback)
I found this very superficial book, he could embrace a little more the subjects, I consider a book that is owing in examples and practical lessons, it is not a reference book and nor it is one for " dummies ", it is simply the whole time informing and reminding the readers of the problems, configurations and resources that Linux has, but it doesn't show how you make it. I would not recommend for users beginners, it is for administrators Linux that are already very well familiarized and they want to improve your performances. (but reminds, the books is just tip of ice-berg, you will need to find the rest of information by your self). The authors are owing a practical book, they possess a lot of experience to share with your readers!

I was very disappointed in this book. It does superficially go over topics but no depth; it does at the end of the chapter however, give references to get further information. I find I keep looking in my other Linux books to understand how to use the commands mentioned in the book. Your money is better spent on other system administration books. To find out which ones, just read the "further readings" at the end of the chapters and the end of the book!

Linux Expert's Book,

Linux System Administration AUTHOR: M Carling, Stephen Degler, James Dennis PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara RhoadesBOOK REVIEW: This book reminds me of a college text. You read and read until the information sinks into your brain. There are no side notes or tips or examples. This is a book where the reader should have a solid knowledge of Linux and what they want to do before buying it. Linux System Administration contains: a 7-page Content, an 11 section Appendix, a 40-page Index, front and back cover have flap extensions for marking you page, and print that is fairly easy to read. Anyone who already has a grasp of Linux will find this book useful.

Great book, one glitch,
By Bradey Honsinger (Bellevue, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Linux System Administration (The Landmark Series) (Paperback)
The book is great--its coverage goes well beyond telling you what to do. Instead, it tells you why to do it, and where to get the tools. However, there was one glitch that annoyed me a bit. At the end of Chapter 1, the authors state that "You should only have to type one URL from this book..." and proceed to point you to their website for links. Unfortunately, the website has no links, to the sites described in the book or otherwise.
