This is not a project for a computing novice, but if you're comfortable partitioning a drive, installing device drivers, and working from a command line, you'll have the necessary skills. By the time you finish, you'll have gained a good working understanding of Unix system configuration and administration. You'll need at least a 386 PC with 16 MB RAM, about 200 MB of disk space to spare, and a CD-ROM drive. The book assumes that your system has a DOS partition and is already running DOS, Windows, or Windows 95. A boot manager makes it possible to keep your current operating system installed if you wish.
Author Stefan Strobel has coauthored a companion volume, Linux: Unleashing the Workstation in Your PC, which delves more deeply into Linux system administration. Both books are also available in a single package, The Complete Linux Kit.
Linux is a free 32-bit multitasking operating system for 32-bit Intel and other industry-standard processors that closely resembles Unix. It supports multiple users, TCP/IP networking, and much of the peripheral hardware found on today's systems. Originally written by Linus Torvalds, Linux is now the product of a global community of interested programmers and is licensed through the Free Software Foundation.

Don't choose this if you want to learn UNIX,
By A Customer
This review is from: Linux Universe: Installation and Configuration (Hardcover)
My purpose in purchasing this book was to learn an operating system that I was not familiar with. I have several friends that use linux as an OS of choice and I felt that I wanted to try it as well. I depend totally on good books to learn things that I don't know. This book doesn't even come close to helping. It actually hindered me from accomplishing my goal. The installation portion is very poorly written. It was vague and assuming. The shell used to configure the X Terminal did not result in a working X term. It errored out during install with indications that files did not exist where they should have been. And the rest of the installation book and the accompanying "Unleashing your Workstation" and other CD's?? Why should I, as short on time as anyone else, want to use the remaining info, when 10% caused this much pain? I'm so frustrated now and I still don't know any more about Unix than I did before. The book refers you to a webpage at Springer (publisher)that doesn't even exist anymore. I want my money back!!

Poor installation infomation,
By A Customer
This review is from: Linux Universe: Installation and Configuration (Hardcover)
The book seems like it was translated from a foriegn language. As a Win95 user, I had a great deal of trouble with this installation and ended up buying RedHat Linux 5.1 (which is much better).
