The metal one is better. It's far sturdier than the plastic, and comes with a hammer tip to aid in tapping buckets closed. The plastic opener actually started to show signs of stress fatigue before even making it a quarter way through a lid!
Weight wise, the aluminum opener is 5.4 oz; the plastic 2.4 oz. In my opinion, the extra weight is hardly noticeable, and more than justifies the durability of the aluminum.
Just pick up the cheapest metal version. At the moment of this review, that would be from this listing: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004AM3WHM
I was rather concerned about it being plastic, but it's actually very sturdy. There was no deformation or flexing of the tool while using it.
Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work with the lids that I have. I actually broke one lid because I used too much force trying to get it open. It does help popping the seal in one spot on the lid, but I have to pry it open with my hands after that; if I continue trying to use the tool I just end up damaging the lid.

I had a sealed 5-gallon bucket (there was a paint strainer between bucket and lid) and this did the trick to unseal it. What a relief!Published 7 days ago by HM
Really did the trick on a lid I just couldn't get off without breaking the plastic.Published 7 days ago by John Stebbins
Love how sturdy this product is. Works great. No more sore fingers and finger nails form trying to open my buckets.Published 24 days ago by Hollywood808
