4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, but not for beginners

1.0 out of 5 stars way too expensive
Homespun yarn usually sells for under six dollars per skein at Michael's or Jo-Ann's; this ($10) is a ridiculous price. On sale, it goes for $4-5. I have used the yarn a lot, and love how it feels after it is worked up, and it has an amazing range of colors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, but not for beginners, September 7, 2009
This review is from: Lion Brand Yarn 790-404C Homespun Yarn, Lagoon (Kitchen)
I've used this yarn to crochet afghans and for making a coat with my Ultimate Knitting Machine. This is not a good yarn for the knitting machine, because it often gets caught on the needles. It is a bulky yarn which works up quickly, so if you want a quick project, this will do it. However, I warn that beginners should start with a different variety of yarn. It's difficult to see the stitches in this yarn, so I often had to work by feel.

The yarn is soft right out of the skein. The colors are rich. The projects always turn out beautifully. The only problem with it is the ends unravel. Do not use it in a fringe or anywhere else the ends will be exposed. I've read once that the ends of Homespun yarn needs to be knotted to make the fringe, but I think that looks awful, too.

PROS:
+ soft and silky to touch
+ bulky weight makes quick projects
+ gorgeous colors

CONS:
- difficult to see stitches, not recommended for beginners
- exposed ends unravel

I think this is a very nice yarn. The only reason I don't use it more often is that it's so popular that people recognize it the minute they see it. I like my yarn to be a little more mysterious. Regardless, it makes beautiful afghans.

UPDATE: Try combining this with Homespun Golden, Chili, Russet, Bourbon, Apple Green, Herb Garden and Wild Fire. It's colorful, but looks great together.

1.0 out of 5 stars Over-priced!, January 12, 2011

I love this yarn but it is terribly over-priced. You can buy it in a craft store or department store for half what amazon is asking for it. Come on Amazon! I usually go to Amazon for good deals but this is ridiculous!

The price of this yarn here is ridiculous. This is acrylic yarn and should be in the $2 - $5 range, not over $10. I bought this at A.C.Moore for 1.99. Don't buy this here.

And I love Amazon. But this is way overpriced.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously???, December 10, 2010
Just let me make myself clear - I LOVE Homespun yarn - the softness and all the beautiful colors. It's one of my favorite yarns. The one-star rating is for this seller. I do a lot of price comparing both in-store and online, and I have to say that I have NEVER seen it so outrageously overpriced Anywhere!! Homespun is not the cheapest yarn out there, by any means, but over $10.00 a skein is highway robbery! If you're looking for Homespun, check out other online craft or yarn stores. Even the official Lion Brand site is far cheaper than this.

3.0 out of 5 stars love-hate relationship, May 8, 2007
I have a love-hate relationship with Lion Homespun yarn. You can make really nice, warm, fluffy stuff out of it; I've made some very gorgeous scarves.

However, every once in a while (and this happened the first time I ever worked with it), you end up with a bad skein. It will bunch up while you're working with it. If you try to un-bunch it, it will eventually break. NOT good.

So, use this yarn happily, and enjoy your finished product, but be forewarned: sometimes Lion Homespun can be evil.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for quick projects, April 21, 2010
I don't generally like acrylic yarns but the thickness of this one makes it perfect for fast projects on big hooks or needles. It has a lot of texture so it's best for patterns that don't have a lot of detail. I use it for afghans and for very fast fashion scarves for my daughter.
You do have to wash it carefully. It pills very badly sometimes.
For the near instant gratification, it's a fun yarn to use occasionally, it won't replace the nicer yarns I use but it's a great option for teaching crochet or knitting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great yarn, but not for a beginner!, April 10, 2009
I recently purchased this yarn and it's gorgeous! The picture is very accurate of the actual color. I think it's great, however, I'm still learning to knit and I would not recommend this for a beginner. It's a little too "fuzzy" to see the stitches you're learning to do. So, I had to buy some "plain" yarn instead to practice with and will save this yarn for when I begin my projects. Otherwise, great quality product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Soft Yarn, April 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this yarn in this color to produce a hat or two for ladies who are losing or have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. The winter of '08-09, I was one of them, undergoing treatment for cancer. I had two hats given to me that sufficed, and I wore them constantly because I was cold even in my bedroom. One was made of this brand of yarn: Lion Brand Homespun. It is 100% acrylic, and if the hat is tied up inside a pillowcase, it can be machine washed and dried. I have made many of these hats in the past year or so, but this yarn is my favorite for its many colors and its softness.

3.0 out of 5 stars Synthetic, May 3, 2008
Lion Brand's Homespun may well be that company's best selling yarn. Most of my own first hand experience with it is for knitting, rather than crochet. Many knitters and crocheters rely on Homespun for items such as afghans and prayer shawls. It's inexpensive, soft to the touch, and comes in many pretty colorways. Those are some of the pros. Some of the cons include the fact that items made from this yarn stretch during use. It also tends to split easily, and the ends fray into puffs.
As an aside, I wonder about the name, as this yarn does not resemble any real homespun yarn that I've ever seen.
