Cool Sock Patterns...,
By navymezzo (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews

....but not ideal for someone new to knitting socks. As a first-time sock knitter, I found the patterns confusing, and had to find videos explaining how to turn the heel, pick up stitches, etc. For someone who knows their way around knitting/crocheting socks, however, this book has some really cute patterns!

One first design I tried was missing some of the pattern. I hope the rest are more complete. I expected more from Lion Brand Yarns.

a review for the crocheters,

I like Lion Brand yarns and their crochet patterns. I'm not a knitter, so the knit patterns have no interest for me (just the same as knitters who don't crochet wouldn't be interested in a crochet pattern). Out of the 30 patterns that are given, 6 patterns are for crochet.
But I have made the one pattern (Joan's socks) at least 3 times to rave reviews. The pattern is clear and concise and easy to understand even if you never made socks before. I learned how to turn a sock heel and it wasn't as hard as I had thought it would be. I have not tried the other crochet patterns yet, but the Christmas stocking pattern looks interesting. I think it's possible the knitted Christmas stocking and the crocheted Christmas stocking photos were reversed - at least that's how it looks to me. Some of these patterns have appeared on the back of various Lion Brand yarn wrappers. Some are free on the Lion Brand website. You may (or may not) want to search there to see if the patern is what you would like. I bought the book mostly for the Joan's crocheted socks pattern. Yes, I do have a paper copy of it but it's getting smeary and ratty looking. Since I plan to make some more of those socks, I needed a better/cleaner copy. Plus I am definitely planning to make at least one Christmas stocking. I can make it in any color I wish since I have the pattern - maybe purple and gold? I recommend this book because it breaks down to about $2 a pattern for the crocheters. If you knit, obviously, you have a lot more choices. But $2 a pattern is really not a bad price. There are other crochet sock books available, too.

Confusing,

I decided to borrow the book before buying it. The first thing I noticed was the exact same wool yarn listing a weight of 3 or 4 depending on the page. (It's a 4.) I compared the sock pattern I wanted to start with (a bit confusing) with the free pattern in the Lion site. Then I was really confused since they were quite different. I decided to try to do it by the book. It came out bigger than I expected so I had to start over by modifying it myself. Not an easy task since the pattern is for beginners, which is exactly what I am. I finally got a nice sock but it shouldn't be so labor intensive. The pair for that one was a lot easier. Love how the socks in the book look but I think I'll have to pass. Too bad not all are availble on the Lion site.

I'm trying to figure out what the pattern for simple socks means, the traveling sock pattern, for beginners.
This is ridiculous. I have never knitted a sock.
