This review is from: Lion King (Audio CD)
The Lion King is one of the most successful animated films of all times, and that is in no small part to the soundtrack. After the success of Ashman & Menkin in The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, it was somewhat disconcerting to see the baton passed on to Elton John and Tim Rice. But the combination of Carmen Twillie singing the English lyrics for "Circle of Life" with Lebo M.'s choir in joyful chant was so powerful that the opening sequence became the trailer for the film. "Be Prepared" is Scar's maliciously gleeful scheme to become king, and the music strikes a balance between buoyancy and menace. But the instrumental score provided by Hans Zimmer is not to be dismissed. It is impossible to hear "...To Die For" without picturing the wildebeest stampede in its frantic beginning or Simba desperately searching for his father as it comes to its melancholy ending.Though the movie celebrates the Circle of Life, it is this music that provides the Breath of Life for the film. |
