Great Early Reader; One of My Favorites,

We bought this, amid a slew of others for our four-year old daughter as she was learning to read. We have this classic Aesop's tale in a longer format, and it's one I've always been fond of, and I rather hoped that the brevity of an early reader variation wouldn't spoil it.
The pleasant surprise is that this story, with far fewer words, a much simpler selection of words than most other variations, and a fair amount of repetition, is absolutely as sweet and enjoyable as any other I've read. Perhaps more so. The story is carried beautifully by the illustrations. Though I am not always a fan of McCue's art, it is spot on in this case. And of course, my daughter can -- and does read this book by herself. It's a great thrill to hear her reading to her younger sister as while we're out running errands or are making the hour-long trek to grandma's house. These books have become car-time favorites. In short, I highly recommend this book -- and others in this series. They really are a great tool for introducing children to reading and building confidence in their newfound literary skills.

This book is the first book that my son ever read on his own & it will forever be in my memories. It is truly a level 1 book & all the words are able to be sounded out. It is a great book for a beginner, has 2 "chapters" so kids feel like they read a big-kid book, and it teaches a lesson about kindness. I highly recommend this book to other beginning readers.

Simple Book for Beginning Readers that Conveys a Wonderful Story,
By
This review is from: The Lion and the Mouse (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
This gem of a book is my favorite at this level in the Step-Into-Reading series. With simple wording -- perfect for a preschooler or a child learning to read -- The Lion and the Mouse, captures the main elements of the traditional fable. It is a story for which the expression 'sure to delight young and old alike' truly fits. Many books for beginning readers lack substance and can make reading boring. However, this meaningful story gives children an opportunity to not only be successful in reading, but to experience the joy of reading. You can't go wrong in choosing this one!

I am constantly searching for readers for my daughter, who is four and just started reading on her own. Early on, I felt very limited because there are very few quality readers that are designed for the initial stage of learning to read-- just after the child has mastered the "Bob" style readers. This book is one of the BEST! I am so sick of the poor-literary-quality, cartoon, barbie, books out there for children which either don't hold their interest, are of no literary value, and/or are not what I want my kids exposed to, and was frustrated by this particularly in the level 1 readers. This book is an excellent SIMPLIFIED version of a CLASSIC tale-- there should be much more of these out there (the only other simplified classic reader I've found is published by Yesterdays Classics, their primer- and it's not quite as good as this, not as well-illustrated; Though not classics in the same way, I am also a fan of "Big Egg, the Carl readers, Biscuit). My daughter was able to read it herself smoothly without getting too tired (good for confidence building)and was captivated by the element of adventure in it. THANK YOU! PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE SIMPLIFIED CLASSICS- even the earliest readers deserve an introduction to quality literature!

Lion and Mouse,
By
This review is from: The Lion and the Mouse (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
This book was done very well with good colorful
pictures. The children enjoyed this story when a parent read it to them and they became very interested with reactions to the story. It was age appropriate for the three boys in attendance ranging in age from five to seven years old.

The Lion and the Mouse,

When my daughter was two, this was one of her favorites, alas; she is now three and has put this aside. However, my one year old now likes the book, perhaps it's the way I read it to her. I have caught my older daughter "reading" this book to her sister. This is a good first reader, simple repetitive words.

My daughter is 3 1/2 y.o. and can read this book by herself. It's a cute story with a nice message and it holds her attention (even though it's not about princesses).

A wonderful early reader and great adaptation of Aesop's tale,

This review is from: The Lion and the Mouse (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
This is one of my favorites in the Step into Reading Step 1 series of early readers (we have almost all of them). It is an adaptation of Aesop's classic fable of "The Lion and the Mouse", only it has been simplified to capture the interest and imagination of young readers, and the beautiful, full-color illustrations enhance the reading experience.
These Step 1 series are recommended for preschool-K - the stories are in large type and the vocabulary is easy. The stories are also in a rhyming format which makes them easy and fun to read. The full color pictures also provide contextual clues as to the word being used in the text. These early readers have raised my daughter's confidence level in reading, and she is doing so well that I'm purchasing the Step Two books (Preschool-Grade 1). I use these books in conjunction with sight words to reinforce her recognition of common vocabulary. |
