Review

A gloriously silly, dizzily plotted historical adventure set in a version of the Tudor era. The first time Catherine sights gigantic Jake Pennlyon, Captain of one of Queen Elizabeth's fleet of raiding vessels, he is insufferable, rude and offensive. But worse than that, he blackmails her into betrothal by threatening to report her married sister Honey's family as subversive Catholics. Then a Spanish galleon glides into the nearby harbor and Cat, Honey and their maid Jennet are shanghaied to the Canary Islands where Cat is politely violated for nights on end until she becomes pregnant by Don Felipe, the Governor. This is in revenge for Jake's rape of Felipe's young Spanish bride. Soon there is a houseful of little bastards. After Cat weds Felipe (she's fond of him), over the bright blue sea comes Jake, kills Felipe, and they wed. Busier than Secretariat's stud schedule. From AudioFile

Set in Elizabethan England during the war between Spain and England, this is a tangled tale of love, revenge and pride. Marie McCarthy makes Carr's characters come alive. She switches easily from Spanish to French to British accents. M.B.K. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Abominable hero, August 9, 2010
A Kid's Review
While this is a very well written book about an interesting period of time, it was totally spoiled for me by the "hero" of the book.
SPOILER ALERT
This "gentlemen" brutally rapes a 15 year old virgin, who subsequently goes mad, blackmails the heroine into an unwanted betrothal while meanwhile impregnating her maid, then kills the heroine's husband. If this is not enough, he mistreats and abuses the heroines 2 year old son. I can only say, this thoroughly spoiled the book for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Darker Virginia Holt..., April 6, 2009
By
squeaks1111 "squeaks1111" (Boston, MA United States) - See all my reviews
I never realized that Phillippa Carr is Virginia Holt (who is also not her real name). This is a bit darker storyline than Holt's gothic. There is violence, and manipulations, and acceptances. This isn't a typical romance, and you're really not sure who to be rooting for. But overall, I was engrossed and engaged... and enjoyed it!
