1.0 out of 5 stars a ghastly mistake, January 3, 2006
This review is from: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: The Quest for Aslan (The Chronicles of Narnia) (Paperback)
The detrimental message this sends to our children is that original sources are meaningless, language and intention are futile, and artistry is nonexistent. The subtlety and literary grandeur of Lewis' novel is placed, apparently, at no value in a rewritten version of a movie, which was itself a not-too-close equivalent of the original. I urge everyone to read the classic novel itself: Lewis' writing is not only witty and substantial, but is also simple enough for even the 3, 4, and 5 year old children of my friend to understand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Surely someone is pulling our legs?, January 2, 2006
This review is from: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: The Quest for Aslan (The Chronicles of Narnia) (Paperback)
C.S. Lewis wrote a novel, it got turned into a movie, and now someone's making a novel out of it?

Does this not have "abortion" written all over it?

3.0 out of 5 stars confused about the previous comments..., January 25, 2006

I'm not sure if the previous people who left the 1-star comments had seen/read the physical book in a bookstore before purchasing this version. If they had not, then I can understand their responses.

I have actually seen the physical book in a bookstore, so I knew that this was a rewritten/simplified version of CS Lewis's book. I can agree with the previous user's comment that CS Lewis's original version can be understood for kids and this rewritten version in no way captures the greatness of Lewis's writing.

However, I wonder if this is the intention of this rewritten version. I don't fully know why this is written -- probably to rewrite it in a really short version (it can be finished in one setting for sure); and perhaps using some modern-day language?

I am an ESL student-teacher. I can see this rewritten version be used for my future ESL students to work on their English. I would love for them to read Lewis's book, but not all of them are at that proficiency level yet. This is one of the ways this version of the book can be used. (though I doubt it was written just for ESL students)

Read the original version by CS Lewis by all means! But I don't think this version is as bad as some people have made it to be. Perhaps it was a result of failed expectations. Alas, a downside of buying books online it is.
