Since her grandfather was seriously injured it has been up to Laurel MacLellan to protect her clan. When her grandfather hires the mercenary Kieran Sutherland to rid them of a group of reivers who threaten to destroy them, Laurel is against the idea. Like the other women in her family she is a seeress, although her visions haven't been very accurate so far. She has seen Kieran in her dreams and believes that he is a threat to her and her family. But her grandfather will not be convinced and Kieran arrives with his men to protect the MacLellans. For Kieran, taking the job Duncan MacLellan offers is a means to make enough money to allow him to avenge his father's death. He discovered eight years ago that the couple he thought of as his parents are really his aunt and uncle. He has reason to believe that his uncle murdered his father and he has vowed revenge-- then he met Laurel.
