2.0 out of 5 stars I wanted so much for this to be good., February 18, 2005

This review is from: Lionel Hampton & the Golden Men of Jazz (DVD)
Lionel Hampton & the Golden Men of Jazz live at the Blue Note is one of my favorite jazz CD's. I really was hoping this DVD would be of the same quality. Unfortunately the mixing is really bad. Sometimes all you can hear is cymbal. Clark Terry's flugal sounds muted all the time like it has a rag in it. The overall mix is terrible -- you can barely hear the horns when they are playing together. When a soloist begins, it takes a while before they turn up the microphone. Definitely not of the quality of some of my other favorite DVD's --- Diana Krall live in Paris or Count Basie & Diane Shure. Get those first!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have heard these guys, you will love it, July 4, 2008
This review is from: Lionel Hampton & the Golden Men of Jazz (DVD)
This DVD has a lot to recommend it. It is in color, sharp

has extras, like biographical info, liner notes. The

standing ovation at the end says it all. This concert

starts off as a warm up, then, as it moves along, it gets

better and better. Examples, Clark Terry's solo on God

Bless the Child, Benny Golson's own I Remember Clifford.

The great Al Grey, and Harry Sweets Edison doing great

solos. Lionel himself, even at this advanced age, shows

his stuff, doing solos on the vibes and drums. When Clark

Terry does a solo on What A Wonderful World, you will

understand the what made this man a giant. These musicians

made the world a lot richer.
