Editorial Reviews

Bandleader, vibraphonist, pianist, drummer and showman-Lionel Hampton did it all, and this 4-CD set has it all (or at least most everything from 1937 to 1949), 92 sides all documented by a 44-page booklet. Inside are such essential works as Wizzin' the Wizz; Flying Home Nos. 1 & 2; Hamp's Boogie Woogie; Hey, Ba-Ba-Re-Bop , and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Hampton Overview...Small Groups and Big Band! October 12, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Proper boxes in general represent fantastic value, considering both the depth of subject material, decent re-mastered sound, and and the provision of a detailed booklet with background information as well as discographies. The Lionel Hampton set covers the mid 30's with small groups to the early 50's with his big band ensembles and showcases Hamp, not only on the vibes, but also on the piano and drums. Because of the high quality of the other soloists as well, this set is essential for every lover of swing.

I always loved lotsa horns, I mean big horns, hot horns that blasted the song. Ray Charles had about 5 to 8 or so of those songs from the start of his career from age 19 to about 22, 1949 to 1951 prior to signing to Atlantic. and Hamp has some here. Not all the songs but a few scattered on about each cd. Sweetness. And, if you like the vibraphone, well, you gotta git this baby. This is not just for jazz buffs, it's for anyone who wants to hear the roots of rock 'n roll. A bonus is that on some songs you swear that you heard something like it on some old black and white cartoons. And, oh my gosh, Proper knows how to do a a box set. No fancy box, though it's actually in one. The recording quality is excellent for the day and I don't mean it's bad, it's excellent, period. I'm virtually positive I bought a Ray Charles Proper box set (or was it someone else? I think it was Ray) cuz the liner notes are just totally informative, of the recordings over time, the singles released and then the albums. This is a treasure trove that if you tried to git hold of the vinyl releases you'd be sloggin' for years trying to do it. I'm delighted to have purchased this box set and recommend it for anyone who likes classic jazz and, particularly, if you like it fast, which is about half the songs. I don't mean it's recorded too fast, I mean the musicians have a pace that is picked up. None of that slow jazz stuff. This is peppy and lively and his picture on the cover of the set exemplifies the content of the music generally, swingin' baby. God bless you. It's about the decisions we make prior to passing away cuz after that it's too late kids.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flyin Home Lionel!! August 14, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I have to tell you Lionel Hampton has yet to be matched in talent, and drive on the "phones." Funny Story, it was Tito Puente the late and legendary " King of the Mambo" was the one who showed Lionel (by carefull persuation) the light of the "phones" and shuned him away from the piano. Unfortunatly not much was known on this subject of the two meeting but I believe they meet in the service or right after Tito was discharged for WW II. I can tell you Lionel, to me, is best know for His BIG version of "Flying Home". A bigger, badder version of the small groups version he did with Benny Goodman, and teddy wilson. Lionels closest match would have to be Red Narrvo form the 1930's, but still Mr. Hampton 's drive and moves on the stage has yet to be matched.
