We bought this a couple of years ago as an 'around the tree' train for Christmas. The track fits perfectly with aa assembled diameter of just under 5 feet. The train itself is fairly large, each car is about the size of a quart jar or a bit bigger. Don't have any problems with it derailing or the carts unlatching. The kids love it and I catch my hubby playing with it fairly often too. It's plastic so we don't expect it to last forever.
Our only complaint is that it eats batteries like crazy. It will go through 6 C batteries in about a day (or less) if you actually play with it. Unplugging the battery compartment from the engine helps a little when it's not in use but they still don't last long. I'd advise anyone thinking about using it long term to purchase the optional 9.6v battery pack. Or make sure you have some rechargeable C's on hand. The way the battery compartment is configured the AA with adapters don't really fit well and there's just not enough power in them to pull the load.
