Sergeant Corinne “Corky” Aleckson and Detective Elton “Smoke” Dawes are on the job again in the fifth entry in the Winnebago County mystery series by Christine Husom.
Once again, Husom engages readers from the start, and takes us on a high speed chase as she and the other members of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office try to unravel the complex web of clues before someone else gets hurt.
The fictional Winnebago County is based on Wright County, MN, and readers acquainted with the state will have fun recognizing familiar landmarks, as they have in Husom’s previous books.
Husom’s background as a sheriff’s deputy serves her well. Readers become part of the investigation and see how law enforcement works from the perspective of an insider. The level of detail provides a richness to Husom’s work.
Just as Corky struggles to identify of the victims she encounters, and give them dignity and a voice, Husom strives to make her characters real people, not just ciphers.
“A Death in Lionel’s Woods,” is a feast for the imagination as we work side-by-side with Corky and Smoke to uncover what is going on in Winnebago County.
The tension is real, and Husom creates a palpable sense of uneasiness when an unknown fiend is stalking Corky at home, making even an armed sergeant trained in self defense seem vulnerable.
Those who pick up “A Death in Lionel’s Woods” won’t want to put it down until they reach the satisfying, breathless conclusion.
In A Death in Lionel's Woods, the 5th in the series, Sergeant Corinne (Corky) Aleckson, Detective Elton (Smoke) Dawes, and the rest of the Winnebago Sheriff’s Department team are together again, this time, trying to solve a mystery that centers around trafficking of women and children. As always, the recurring cast members are lovable and endearing, the bad guys, vile, dangerous and despicable, and the stories of the victims of the crimes they perpetuate, heart-rending and poignant. I highly recommend all of Christine Husom's books and I loved A Death in Lionel's Woods.
