Actually, you can really consider this to be a "Shovels and Rope" album. I'm fairly certain they both recorded on the album, although Cary does all the vox on this album. Stylistically, it's in the same wheelhouse as the other Shovels and Rope stuff. Which is a very good wheelhouse to be in. If you love S&R, you will love this album. It's perhaps not as fully developed as 'O Be Joyful, but the sound is there, and you'll be glad you bought it. Five stars.

Cary's voice is like something you would hear from Dolly Parton mixed with Loretta Lynn is the best way to describe it I guess! She is a wonderful writer and an amazing vocalist. This has become my favorite CD recently, too bad it took this long for me to find out about her and Shovels & Rope. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes bluesy sounding folk/country type music. In a strange way she makes me think I'm back in the good ole days of the world...

I don't know if you're familiar with Shovels and Rope, or their female singer, Cary Ann Hearst, but she's about as good as they come. Very powerful voice and delivery, and her song-writing is evocative. This album is addictive. Rivals my all-time favorite (Martha Wainwright's "Martha'). We have all of their stuff, have seen them at the Nelsonville Music Fest (Ohio), and in concert at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville. Wow. They are hot, hot, hot.

My favorite song here is "are you ready to die". or "american made machine". or "eastern continental divide". or really any of them. every song on this album is great! i have listened to the whole thing two or three times daily for the past week. and i can't see it getting old anytime soon!!

Saw Shovels and Rope live in Columbia SC they were excellent and this album from Cary Ann Hearst on her own is equally good if you get a chance to see them live then its a must do. Fantastic

I really like the writing on this cd. My favorite songs are The Hardest Thing and Forsaken Blues. She has a original writing style to go along with familiar country sounds
