A great resource for biochemistry and medical students.,
By
This review is from: Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry (Paperback)
Whenever I take a class, because I am Deaf and get different amounts of information from the classes/professors/interpreters...I always buy more books than the recommended textbook or the required one. Usually I spend as much time as needed going through all the books to see which will prove the most helpful to me. This book really helped me through several classes and has continued to be a great reference source for me. The graphics were great...only complaint is that they aren't in color. But they still provided me with plenty of information that sometimes the professors neglected in class, but turned up on tests. Again, this is an excellent book and resource. I've lent it out to some and others have bought it on my say so. I also use it in science education. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

I finally understand!,

This book is amazing. I took biochemistry in college and again my first year of medical school. I decided to use Lippincott to study for the biochem final. I really wish that I had picked it up sooner. I have a much better concept of how many of the systems work! It does an excellent job of differentiating confusing concepts while demonstrating how they are related.Lippincott does an excellent job of explaining everything in a clear and organized manner. Perhaps more importantly, it ties together important integrated concepts, and will give references to from one section of the book to another for enzymes/coenzymes/reaction species/vitamins that are essential to various reactions--so that you can make the connection for how each thing works in different systems. I highly recommend this not just as a review book, but as a book to use concurrently with your course. Of course, I should warn that the book has not been revised since 1994, and since biochemistry is a quickly changing field, there are definitely some inaccuracies or important omissions. But for a standardized exam (like the National Board Biochemistry Shelf Exam) it is wonderful. This book is too detailed for use in studying for Step 1 of the Boards. Learn as much as you can the first time around during your biochemistry course, then study with First Aid.

I am starting medical school in the fall and after being out of school for a year, I wanted to brush up on my basic biochemistry knowledge. This book allows for concise review without having to dig through a huge text. It highlights the important points in a well organized manner. I suppliment when needed with my old biochemistry text, but haven't even needed to do that much. It is a must for anyone needing a good outline of important biochemistry topics in a clear format.

VERY GOOD, BUT NEEDS TO BE UPDATED,

"Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry" is one textbook that should be given credit for its simple and illustrative way of imparting knowledge. This medium-sized book was essentially designed for non-biochem students who must take a course or two in biochemistry. It provides straightforward overview at any time revisions become necessary. However, the downside of it is that it hasn't been updated for nearly ten years now. Biochemistry is a dynamic science, and although I admit that the book is still good, I think that this Second Edition which appeared in 1994 needs to be updated. A Third Edition is long overdue!

Must have for biochemistry,

This book was excellent for my biochemistry class and for board studying. I used it mainly as a reference during my board studying. It has great diagrams and references to biochemical diseases.

Perfect!,

You know, most review books are too concise. They simply list the points (next to bullets) and expect you to know and understand them. Some of the facts they LIST are not entirely accurate, some are trivial, some important facts are left out completely. Then give you a bunch of MCQs and feel they've done their job.Not the case with this book. Although it's called all review, it's perhaps comprehensive enough to promote to an introductory (I stress this book is not for Biochemistry majors; it is perhaps most suited for Medical students - ie. those who don't need very detailed biochemistry knowledge) biochemistry text. Most medical (and other non-biochemistry majors) students will find this more than adequate for their courses. It contains more relevant facts than the Board Review Series by Dawn Marks (which I found insufficient for my course). The feature that sets it apart from the competition is that it EXPLAINS the facts. Sure, it doesn't have as much detailed explaination as Lehninger, Voet or Stryer, but it is certainly enough. If you're not a Biochemistry major, this is a must get for your biochemistry course.

Excellent accurate material for a brief review of subject,

I reccomend this book to all foriegn doctors who are preparing for the USMLE. The American students will also find this and excellent review guide to brush-up their biochemistry even weeks before the boards. It is well tailored to the requirements of first and second year medical students. The book also provides conceptual explanations unlike many other texts, which merely relate the facts and attempt to support them with petty statistical figures. The illustrations are tastefully done; are almost self-explanatory, are accurately placed and appropriately sized.

Hi, I got this book during my first year of medical school. It was perfect for the biochemistry course with a lay-out that makes it easy to read. This summer I found use for the book again as I was preparing for the USMLE step 1 and again I realized what a great book this is. Fast and easy to review, and the questions make you feel confident in the subject.

My experience with this book is much different from the rest of the reviews. I am a practicing Chiropractor. I had no boards to take. I deal with nutrition and supplementation in my practice, and I wanted to review biochemistry to have a stronger foundation. This book became much more to me than that. This book has been a religous experience. When I took Biochemistry in school I had a hundred other differnt things going on including studying for boards. While I found it interesting, it was a job. The subject of biochemsitry is to me now, a meditation on the mind of GOD. This book unravels the mystery of life. The pictures and the flow chart reviews at the end of the chapters now allow me to OWN concepts, instead of memorize them. I congratulate the authors on a fine book, and thank them from the bottom of my heart.

The Best Review in Biochemsitry I've Ever Seen,

As I wrote in the title, it is a review ! So, Do not expect from it to give u detailed information about the subject (especially if your field of speciality is biochemistry). However, despite of being review, it has got all the core information and the details that needed to be known by the student. It is true that there are some topics which are not covered thoroughly such as plasma proteins, minerals metabolism in the book but the missed is not so much compared to what it has. I really strongly recommend for you, students (particularly medical students). Being simple, concise and perfectly illustrated with figures, it will save your time and effort and will give u the core info that you need to get A or (even + ) in the exam.It is a Must-book for you med-Student.
