Without question, "Lipslide" is a fantastic, uplifting, 5-star album..... in its original form. For folks in the U.S. who are interested in purchasing this, I suggest a) buying the U.K. version, or b) buying this U.S. release PLUS the follow-up "Kelly's Locker" EP.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mangled tracklisting
I would give the UK version of this album, which I own, 4 or 5 stars. I've heard the US version at the local record store - and in my opinion this is a case of the consumer loosing out to the interests of the label. For some unknown (but clearly bad) reason, the US album omits two of the three best songs from the UK version - Penthouse Girl / Basement Boy and Taking...

For some inane reason, the U.S. record label removed some of the best tracks from the import and substituted them with tracks that really aren't as good. Thankfully, the omitted songs do show up on "Kelly's Locker".... either way people are stuck shelling out a little more cash, but in the end its worth it.

WHY the U.S. record companies continuously ignore good music because of its "lack of commerciality" is beyond me, and why there was a 2 1/2 year gap between the British release of the album and the American release is an even bigger mystery.

If you want REAL sunny, breezy, intelligent POP music, throw out that awful Christina Aguilera & Mandy Moore - this chick this the REAL DEAL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop out of the youth market, February 25, 2000

Sarah Cracknell provides a CD full of pop music for adults. Continuing along the lines of her day job as lead singer for Saint Etienne she crafts the best songs depicting love and loss heard in a very long time. "Desert Baby", with the refrain 'Every night, every day, every second you're away I'm in a desert baby, don't make me wait. Every night, every day, every second you're away Feels like a desert baby, come home to stay' proves that dance music can be listenable. Buy it now. You'll never hear this on American radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop Fans, Buy This Now!, February 11, 2000

Sarah Cracknell's Lipslide has been floating about on import for about three years now, in various configurations, but the long-awaited US release by INSTINCT nails it. The artwork is divine, the bonus video is superb, and the tracklisting remains stunning. Songs like Anymore, Coastal Town, and Home are above-average pop symphonies, and Ready or Not,4 Months, 2 Weeks show the warm heart beating below the synths. The Japanese version of this album contains many more tracks and B-sides, but I feel the US release is more consistent. I can't wait to hear Sarah's next album with Saint Etienne, but until then, Lipslide will more than tide me over. Excellent, buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS C.D. AND IT WILL BECOME YOUR SUMMER FAVOURITE, May 31, 2000

THIS IS THE ALBUM (ALONG WITH 'CONTINENTAL') THAT GOT ST. ETIENNE THE MISADVENTURES OF MARGARET SOUNDTRACK GIG.

ALTHOUGH I'D ALWAYS BEEN A HUGE FAN OF THE BAND, SARAH'S SOLO ALBUM, SHOWCASING THE BEST POP VOICE IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC, WAS THE REASON I APPROACHED HER, THEN THE BAND TO WORK ON THE FILM.

'READY OR NOT' BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES. HER PIANO VERSION - ON THE DIRECTOR'S CUT OF MARGARET - SOON TO BE SEEN IN THE US IS WONDERFUL. HEARTFELT, BROKEN-HEARTED AND SEXY.

THIS US VERSION OF 'LIPSLIDE' FEATURES FOUR GREAT NEW SONGS AND SOME REMIXED TRACKS - INCLUDING A BREATHTAKING VERSION OF 'HOME'.

BUY THIS C.D. AND IT WILL BECOME YOUR SUMMER FAVOURITE.

FOR THE RECORD, I SAW HER PERFORM THIS C.D. LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT'S IN LONDON AND HER VOICE WAS ASTONISHING. AND SHE'S BEAUTIFUL. WHY IS SHE NOT A HUGE STAR? AND WHEN WILL THE BAND GET THE SALES THEY DESERVE?

WHATEVER. THIS IS A MUST BUY. I LOVE IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars SMOOTH, SMOOTH SARAH, October 11, 2006
This review is from: Lipslide (Audio CD)
Sarah's voice is so sickeningly smooth- it's just unbelievable. Her voice is the polar opposite of Diamanda Galas' another favorite artist of mine. Tracks I like include: "COASTAL TOWN"- dancey and uplifting; "4 months, two weeks"- very dramatic, makes me teary-eyed-damn; "Aussie Soap Girl"- a fun, flirty uptempo pop tune; "Anymore" which was released as a single, accompanied with a video that's available on the interactive edition of the cd. The music is quite different from her group's(SAINT ETIENNE) material. Basically Sarah is conveying her songs about a woman's healthy attitude towards life and zest for life and about a woman scorned and hurt( 4 Months, 2 weeks). But mainly most of the songs have positive messages. A great first solo effort by Sarah Cracknell.

Sarah Cracknell is good at what she does whether she is working with Saint Etienne or not. "Lipslide" is a fantastic album and I highly recommend buying it. It revisits some of the territory earlier tread on Saint Etienne's "Tiger Bay" and I love it! "Coastal Town," "Home," and "Goldie" are particularly excellent. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A blend of pop happiness and melancholy loneliness., February 27, 2000
This review is from: Lipslide (Audio CD)
Which works pretty well, actually, because it means you get songs that are both catchy AND moving. Sarah's a little all over the place in terms of musical style (the album ranges from the dancey 'Desert Baby' to the acoustic 'Oh Boy, The Feeling When You Held My Hand' and everywhere in between), but the lyrics are meaningful and, at times, quite depressing in the losses they portray. Quite a good album, and definitely worth the money. If you missed out on it 3 years ago when it came out overseas (and chances are that you did), don't miss it now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant light dance, light chill and a little alternative., March 25, 2005
This review is from: Lipslide (Audio CD)
This is a nice mixture of dance, chill-out and alternative rock. Cracknell's vocals are elegant enough for the easy-going dance and Chill-out vibes but work well for here acoustic diddy: "Oh boy..."

Now as for that Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore album. I really wish people would not use their reviews to bash other artists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sarah Cracknell - Lipslide, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Lipslide (Audio CD)
Sarah Cracknell, the frontwoman for Saint Etienne, step out on her own with Lipslide, a wonderfully poppy album. It still sounds vaguely like Saint Etienne, but that may simply be because her distinctive voice is so evocative of that band. "Anymore" is a delightful little gem, and you have to wonder why lesser tracks by mediocre artists regularly make it onto the radio waves. "Home" and "Goldie" both achieve a quiet grace, while "Coastal Town" and "Aussie Soap Girl" benefit from some delicate guitar strumming. Cracknell takes on the Saint Etienne habit of naming songs seemingly at random, but when they're this good, who cares?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best unheard CD (in the US) of its time, March 16, 2001
This review is from: Lipslide (Audio CD)
Great solo outing from the voice of Saint Etienne. It's hard to understand why this disc went unoticed in the marketplace when it is so full of radio-friendly hooks, beats, and melodies. Simply wonderful.
