An iconic recording,

This review is from: Lipstick (Audio CD)
This recording showcases Katherine Kemler's cutting edge programming and polished performance standards. For anyone wanting to hear beautiful playing of some of the most demanding contemporary repertoire, this in the recording for you! Beginning with Jacob Ter Veldhuis title track, Lipstick, this recording grabs your ear with its interesting sonorities and tunes which paint pictures in your mind as you listen. The next track, Janua Coeli, by Paul Hayden, is the answer for any flutist who has searched (in vain) for an audience friendly piece for the unusual combination of flute and saxophone, brilliantly played by Kemler and saxophonist Griffen Campbell. Robert Dick's Techno Yaman delighted me with its playful use of an electronic keyboard also played by the flutist, and the exciting Higdon piece, appropriately named Rapid Fire, showcases Kemler's top-notch technique. The pieces by Anne La Berge, Harvey Sollberger and Ian Clarke all effectively incorporate elements of improvisation and popular music into the classical flute repertoire, with Kemler's playing channeling sounds of a rock band jamming on stage. For any flutist studying these pieces, you won't find a better recording to listen to. For any musician wanting to hear the flute as you don't usually hear it, you'll love it.
