4.0 out of 5 stars Better Than You'd Think
Like many others, I scoffed and rolled my eyes at the promos for "Lipstick Jungle." It basically looked like NBC's spin-off of "Sex and the City." After all, both shows are based on books by Candice Bushnell and both shows focus on the friendship between beautiful, successful women in NYC.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short series
Very expensive considering how short the series is. Also, I find it hard to believe that the three main characters would be friends in real life. Nico and Wendy's friendship is believable but Victory is just too immature and irritating to watch at times.

But honestly, "Lipstick Jungle" is great on its own merit! The show's major strength lies in its leading ladies. All three actresses make their characters - and their relationships - believable. Their chemistry lends itself to the audience and you can see why their friendship works.

I also really liked how the show focused on the women's careers. While the ladies of "Sex and the City" had powerful careers, not much time was spent on that aspect of their lives. "Lipstick Jungle," on the other hand, weaves its storylines around the women's jobs (instead of the men they love). It was refreshing to see such strong female characters talk about things beside their romantic entanglements.

On the downside, some of the plot lines lacked originality and pizazz. Sometimes it felt as though the writers were going for "hip" or "scandalous" scenarios (i.e. threesomes) that just fell flat. These situations didn't work because they were too tame and, more importantly, other shows went there...years ago.

For the most part, however, "Lipstick Jungle" is a solid show. It has everything successful TV needs: good acting, believable characters, and interesting stories.

One word of caution: the DVD only features seven episodes, so it would be cost efficient to rent or wait until the price drops a bit. You can also watch the episodes (with limited commercials) on NBC's website for free. Check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic show :-0, June 5, 2008

This review is from: Lipstick Jungle - Season One (DVD)
I had been looking forward to this for so long. I'd seen all the casts interviews on Today so long ago and couldn't wait to watch this. Because in Australia we yet again don't keep up with the rest of the world, I bought this on dvd and it was as good as I thought it would be. I really love Candice Bushnall and she didn't disappoint with this series.
Brooke plays Wendy Healy, Kim is Nico and Lindsay is Victory. They are longtime friends who are challenged with keeping up with complicated business and personal lives. Wendy is a film executive and a wife to a musician husband Shane whose own career takes a backseat to hers. Victory had a top notch fashion career that she's trying to start again. And lastly Nico who's the editor of a top fashion magazine and her marriage has issues too. That's the main premise and with each episode we see their lives go through ups and downs professionally and personally.
When my copy arrived, I watched it all in one weekend. It's addictive and I found it really enjoyable. Victory is my favourite character and yet they all make the show. I don't think there is one particular stand out role. This is a great new program that you'll really enjoy if you loved SATC. It's different and yet just as good and I hope it gets the same kind of longevity. I highly recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars If Lipstick is the Jane of the Jungle, call me Tarzan!!!, May 22, 2008
This review is from: Lipstick Jungle - Season One (DVD)
Lipstick Jungle has proven that it has what it takes to be the sexiest show on television. The combination of powerful women and provocative storylines will make your loins tingle. Candace Bushnell has done it again, and could have quite possibly trumped the raved about "Sex in the City". As a guy's guy who was wrangled in by my girlfriend to watch this show, I have been pleasantly surpised (considering I would have not watched it if it wasnt for her). Further, the passion and elitism these women exhibit encourages my girlfriend to be the same way which has really spiced up our love life. Guys, trust me, its a win/win situation for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars "It's A Jungle Out There!", May 22, 2008
This review is from: Lipstick Jungle - Season One (DVD)
The BEST new series on television! I was "hooked" from the very first episode! What's the deal about everyone knocking Brooke Shields acting?
Give her a break! She's great and definately the main reason that I started watching the show! The storylines and remaining members of the cast along with Brooke kept me watching and wanting more! ONLY 7 EPISODES!
Uggggghhhh! Definately not enough! Can't wait for season 2 to start! If the show continues as it started, it should become a solid hit! They need to give it a chance to grow and gain the viewership that it deserves! They don't even give shows a chance anymore! Those of you who didn't catch this first season of this great series need to purchase this DVD and check it out! I can guarantee you'll join the rest of us for season 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent new series, May 12, 2008
This review is from: Lipstick Jungle - Season One (DVD)
I really love this tv series. After reading (and loving) the book, I couldn't wait for the show to come out. I think all three actresses are very talented (yes, even Brooke) and each episode will keep you intrigued til the end. I was only disappointed with the lack of episodes for the first season, but hope for more episodes in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't want to miss this..., May 11, 2008
This review is from: Lipstick Jungle - Season One (DVD)
This is a GREAT well made TV series. NBC definitely has a hit show on their hands. I am hooked after the first few episodes and can't wait for season 2 to start. The first season was so good but short. Well written by the same writer Candance Bushnell of Sex & The City. Lots of great fashion, powerful women you can relate to, love, friendships, office politics, drama, great fun and best of all...hot men. The young Kirby Atwood play by Robert Buckley is totally eye candy and Andrew McCarthy and Paul Blackthorne ain't bad either.
I am not a Brooke Shields fan either and find her acting still weak but Kim Raver who plays Nico Reilly is superb in her role. The storyline and just the guys alone are worth watching. You can catch every old episodes online but I couldn't wait and pre-order this dvd set to enjoy at home all over again. It has become my favorite running TV series now. I used to love my Thursdays after I discover this show. I would say it is as good as Sex & The City except this is a television series not HBO and the great thing is it is not a copy cat either. While SATC jump from one guy to the next on their sex life, LJ focus more on relationships and my heart ache watching some scenes which I haven't felt a long time watching a TV series. I hope season 2 will have much more episodes. I recommend this to all my girlfriends.

Lipstick Jungle (based on the book Lipstick Jungle by Candance Bushnell) is the show that we have been missing to fill the void left by Sex and the City. Although not as racy, it is still quite sexy and highly addictive.

Nico Rieally (Kim Raver) is the editor of Bonfire Magazine, Wendy Healy (Brooke Shields) is the head of a movie studio and Victoria Ford (Lindsay Price) is a fashion designer. They are all amongst the top 50 most powerful women.

Nico is perfectly and compellingly portrayed by Kim Raver. Her character is so flawlessly played that she comes across as completely believable and she is able to engage us in her story. Nico is successful editor in a very competitive industry, she most be vigilant and aggressive in the work place to keep her job. But, she is not as successful in her marriage and soon starts an affair with 25 year old Kirby. Wendy tries to manage work and home life and stay at home dad, Shane (who is pretty much perfect). Victoria is a whiny, all over the place fashion designer who is dating a millionaire and trying to keep her business afloat. This character is a bit to flimsy to be taken seriously and her portrayal gives us nothing new. I wouldn't miss her.

Regardless, this is one addictive show. Each episode tests and strengthens the friendship of these 3 women and gives one entertaining show.

If you are looking for the next Sex and the City like I was. This is not it. If you are looking for the next Emmy Award Winning Show This is NOT it. But overall it is incredibly entertaining and has kept me at the edge of my seat for the last 5 hours straight! I have found it funny, smart and Brooke is FABBBBB! A must for anyone who needs a little entertainment in their life!
