5.0 out of 5 stars Great West Michigan Rock
What a great CD and a fantastic band to see live. I highly recommend getting the whole CD, but if you don't get the entire CD, "Somebody Like You", "100 in a 55", "Hero", "Stepping Stone" and "Breathe" are musts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid modern rock album, but nothing you haven't heard before
I didn't know much about Pop Evil when I ran across their 2008 debut Lipstick on the Mirror in a clearance bin, only that they were opening for this year's big Judas Priest/Whitesnake tour. That was enough to convince me to chance a couple of bucks on the CD.

My first thought after hearing Lipstick on the Mirror was "these guys are opening for Priest?" A...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Rock Album, April 28, 2009

POP EVIL is real true sound of Rock. All songs are great, but my faves are 'Breathe,' 'Shinedown,' 'Hero,' and 'Another Romeo & Juliet.' I love the way 'Another Romeo & Juliet' starts with guitar playing. If you want a great rock album pick this one up. You won't be disappointed at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop Evil, October 23, 2010
According to the official Pop Evil bio, they are "best thing to come out of Michigan since the automobile and Kid Rock". Not so sure about the latter as the Rock's career has been a bit dicey of late, but after listening to "Lipstick on the Mirror" I will tell you if you've been looking for a band that sounds like a grungier "Three Doors Down" that went to a "Hurt" concert with the guys from "Circus of Power", I have found them and currently they are the Cadillac in your playlist.

With early beginnings in the Grand Rapids music scene as far back as 2001 and having cut their incisors on the club circuit, Pop Evil has produced their first full length cd having signed with Pazzo Music in 2007.

Clearly the heavy rotation, if there is such a thing anymore, track is "Hero" which grabs the listener by their rock/metal nether regions without any apologies. Nor should there be. Pop Evil clearly have a corner on the popular lyrical approach--catchy, memorable, soundtrack ready--and the wall of sound produced by guitarists Dave Grahs and Tony Greve is a popsicle licking frenzy through twelve tracks. Dylan Allison and Matt DiRito on bass hold down the beat and bottom end impeccably--and for once no one is overplaying.

Leigh Kakaty on lead vocals, is an attention grabber and as impassioned as they come... think of Alex Mitchell's zeal with expert production and effects and you may get an idea of his range and style. It is easy to believe that HE believes in what he is singing about. In short, he is the poster child for alternative rock stations across the country.

Currently on tour supporting Tesla, if "Lipstick on the Mirror" is Pop Evil's calling card, the rock and roll doors are wide open for this quintet. Lastly, Pop Evil is what makes girls want to date a guy in a band and makes guys want to BE in the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Lipstick" is a full-throttle hit, February 9, 2010

This review is from: Lipstick on the Mirror (Audio CD)
From the very first listen it's easy to tell that the debut album, "Lipstick on the Mirror", from Michigan-based hard rockers, Pop Evil, is bound to be an instant success.

From the hard-hitting chorus of the national hit single "Hero" to the sentimental lyrics of "Somebody Like You" and the ripping guitar entrance of "Another Romeo & Juliet" it doesn't take long for one to realize that this isn't just another cookie cutter rock band.

Led by the distinct vocals of Leigh Kakaty, and backed up with additional vocal workings from guitarists Dave Grahs and Tony Greve, bassist Matt DiRito, and drummer Dylan Allison, this band has a harmony that most others can only strive for. This is elegantly showcased in the acoustic versions of "100 in a 55", "Somebody Like You", and "Stepping Stone" tacked on to the end of this cd.

This band is anything but ordinary, as they take rock to the next level. Be it the fast-paced "3 Seconds to Freedom" or the slower "Stepping Stone", there is nothing that can be called filler on this album. The reflective lyrics of well known, radio-played hit "100 in a 55" take us on the difficult journey they take from the bottom as they start on their road to success. Who knew that, ironically, it would be one of their most successful songs. All of their songs can be found to have a storied meaning behind them, making them just as relatable as they are listenable.

As the lyrics of "Rolling Stone" claim, "it ain't about the money or the fame, I do it for the love, I will never change." Of course, the success they've found is nothing to complain about, but when it comes down to it, Pop Evil is all about the music. And it's easy to tell as you work your way through the album that music is their passion.

Ending on a high note with the light and airy "Hard Highway" and the down to earth "Hey Mister" we find that the only bad thing about "Lipstick" is that it, unfortunately, goes by so fast that you're left craving more. However, the more you listen, the more you will find that whether or not you like the songs, you will be singing the lyrics in your head. If you're an avid listener of rock or even more on the casual side, "Lipstick on the Mirror" is a must have for any fan of good music. It's guaranteed to earn a spot amongst the favorites on your shelf.

With the grand success that Pop Evil's first album has shown us, I have little doubt that there will be any of the so-called "Sophomore slump" from this band, as we patiently wait for record number two, due out this summer. This is definitely the band to keep your eye on.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new faves, November 24, 2008
I bought this cd at a Pop Evil concert a few weeks back. We hung out with the band before the show. They are great guys who really know how to ROCK! I love all their songs. For those who dig Pop Evil but also like a bit of Rap, check out the lead singer, Leigh Kakaty. He is also a great rapper that goes by Kakaty. These guys have a style all their own. Great music.

(REAL NAME)
Being from Grand Rapids, I have heard plenty about this band in the past few years. A couple of their songs were tremendously popular in the area, both of which are on this album. This album is filled with great songs, and is the type of album you can listen to without ever touching the "next" button. If you are a fan of rock music, buy this album. You will not be disappointed.
