I've been often accused of making bad comparisons, so, to keep my track record intact, I'll say that Gomez reminds me a bit of Blind Melon (and to me, that is a good thing -- I'm a big Melon fan). Trippy, weed-twinged southern-style jam rock. Right on brothers and sisters, right on.

You will buy Liquid Skin. You will then pop it into your CD player and turn it up too loud because Hangover starts our rather quiet. You will enjoy both Hangover and Revolutionary Kind. Then Bring It On will come on and you will finally start to get it. Next comes Blue Moon Rising that you will underrate at first, along with Las Vegas Dealer. Brace yourself, because We Haven't Turned Around is next, and it will blow you away. It might take until about halfway through the song when it comes back from a beautiful string interlude with slightly distorted guitars. Then comes Fill My Cup, the overdrive on the bass will intrigue you, but it will not really compare to the album version of Rhythm & Blues Alibi. Next comes Rosalita which can only be described as damn beautiful. California is rather long, but you will be too caught up in it to really notice. Last comes Devil Will Ride, which should just bring about a perfect end to one of the best albums in recent history. You will have just spent almost an hour of your life that you will wish you could get back to and relive, because it will never sound as awe-inspiring as that first time. You will eventually get to know the album like the back of your hand. It will play through your mind all the time, but it will never be able to surprise you as it did that first listen. And you will never be the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gomez "Bring It On" again........, December 9, 1999
By
This review is from: Liquid Skin (Audio CD)
The strength of their debut led me to buy this CD unheard on the day it was released. Liquid Skin cantains fewer "first-listen-likes" than Bring It On (notably Whipping Picadilly and Arrested), but as is often the case, the "growers" are the stronger tracks, and have much more longevity. My recommendation would be to buy Bring It On first if you don't already own it. If you do, then this contains more of the Tijuana Lady type track, and less of the Warm Trombone! Gomez style is rich and varied, but with a definitive style running through their work. Guitar is dominant, but not to the point of tedium, and the rough formed harmony singing reminds me of The Band (albeit at their loosest.) I hope Gomez continue to develop their style, as another album in this vein would probably be overkill. Personally, I am going to make my own Gomez tape, with my 6 favorites from each of the two CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars best of 1999, November 7, 1999

This review is from: Liquid Skin (Audio CD)
I bought it on a whim, safe in the knowledge that nothing could knock off my personalalbum of the year pick (Things Fall Apart by the Roots) from its pedestal. But as Liquid Skin's eleven tracks slowly unwound, and as my jaw dropped steadily towards the ground, I realized that I was going to have to rethink my rather premature pick. Maybe I'm letting my giddiness about Liquid Skin override my good judgment, but this is quite frankly one of the best rock albums I have ever purchased. Those pasty-faced lads from Gomez had me sucked in by the first chorus of Hangover, and it just got better from there. Revolutionary Kind has some of the best multiple guitar interplay I've heard, and Las Vegas Dealer is a fun song to crank when you're driving (over the speed limit, preferably). In addition, Rosalita (which sounds like what might happen if the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam got together for a laid-back jam session) is THE sad, beautiful, tongue-in-cheek song of the year. But the album's highlight in my mind is its closer, Devil Will Ride, a song I wish could close every rock album I bought from here on out. It's that perfect. I've always enjoyed songs that make you sing along even if you have no idea what the singer is saying. I still can't imagine what might make someone dislike this album as much as some of the reviewers here, but if you like good, intelligent guitar rock with a little bit of experimentation, Liquid Skin by Gomez will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars If I could only take 10 albums to a deserted island...., February 3, 2004

...this would be the first I'd grab. This CD is a stellar music experience. I discovered Gomez 3 years ago (via Amazon's suggestion list!) and have been head-over-heels in love since then. While I think their production capabilities and overall tightness as a band is evolving -- and shows on In Our Gun -- I love Liquid Skin for its amazing range of vibes that I never tire of settling myself into.

There is not a bad song on this CD, period. Every one is original, creative, and feels completely different. These guys are music purists and you can hear it. It also helps that they are witty, have great senses of humor, and are genuine originals (redundancy intended). If you're looking for a truly fresh music experience unlike anything else out there, don't waste another minute and climb on the Gomez trolley NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars This album changed my life..!, August 19, 2002
This review is from: Liquid Skin (Audio CD)
My first year of college, my roommate introduced me to this band called Gomez, a group one of his friends recommended to him. 'Liquid Skin' was in constant rotation in our cd player during parties, hangouts, chill time, whenever. Before I knew what this stuff was, I told him I liked this one song i kept hearing (turned out to be 'we still haven't turned around). After the year ended, i bought the album as soon as i got home, and got two of my friends hooked on it too. I guess you could say I got hooked on it too, but all three of us have this incredible love for this album, its something you can fall in love with Instantly, no joke, there's something about the musicianship and the lyrics and the so-friggin-chill sound of this band. It's great for driving, hanging out, whenever. And the best part is that this album kicks [butt] from track 1 to the end, EVERY single song is amazing. The music goes right through my body and man does it feel good. It's great to wake up to, fall asleep to, party to, smoke to, drive to, its just absolutely incredible. If you play it a couple of times when you're with friends, they'll be asking you about this band in no time, its so easy to get hooked on it. I highly recommend this album to ANYONE, I can't say much else about it- the music speaks for itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this disc!, October 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Liquid Skin (Audio CD)
While casually browsing at my local record store, I noticed a sign posted in the corner listing the "Top 10 For The Holidays" discs of the year by the employees. While their individual tastes and eccentricities were apparent by the huge disparity of musical suggestions (everything from hard rap to classical), there was one glaring constant. Gomez : Liquid Skin. After inquiring, I immediately had the attention of several aforementioned employees, who passionately regaled me with glowing praise of this band and and album. So I bought it. Damn glad I did too. "Revolutionary Kind" grabbed me from the beginning and it justs gets better from there. These guys display a musical maturity that is refreshing in this age of musical dreck we are subjected to every radio day. They are difficult to pinpoint regarding style and influence, but like the best in any profession, simply borrow/innovate/adapt what they desire into something unique and special. A musical gestalt. Since then I have acquired "Bring It On" and a "Live" disc as well. Both have been extremely satisfying. Looking forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album that stands alone, July 22, 2003

From the instant I first heard this album a couple of years ago, I was hooked. Being first introduced to the band by the song "rhythm and blues alibi", I was so intrigued by their utterly unique sound displayed on this track, I bought the CD. From there it seems I discovered each song at a time, and the CD was put in regular rotation for almost a year, and is still one of my favorites. Their style is like Whiskeytown with the complexity and diversity of the Beatle's Sgt. Peppers. Their song patterns are completely unpredictable, something rarely found these days. Each song has a different setting; whether it's the laid back Blue Moon Rising, the anthemic Rhythm and Blues Alibi or Devil Will Ride, or the aqueous buzz of Revolutionary Kind. This album offers something new every time it is put in, and will add faculty to any music lovers collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Gamble Payed Off..., July 28, 2001
By
"beergod" (Sydney, Australa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Liquid Skin (Audio CD)
I took a gamble when I purchased this album. I'd heard a few singles such as "Rhythm and Blues Alibi" and "We Haven't Turned Around" and reasoned that a greater selection of their work would be fairly solid. What I hadn't counted on was the possibility that this album would blow me away with its rich textures, raw energy, and funky unplugged flavour. Gomez is unlike any band I have ever heard before and are almost impossible to categorize. At first listen it almost seems as though they are creating their music using only their voices and whatever happens to be within arm's reach, such is the rough, raw edge of their songs. At closer inspection you begin to appreciate the sheer amount of talent these boys have. From acoustic little ditties such as "Revolutionary Kind" and "Hangover", to beautiful ballads like "We Haven't Turned Around" and "California", each song on Liquid Skin is unique in it's own right. If your ears are weary of the same old radio fodder and you're shopping for something refreshingly different, look no further.

Alternative music offered another version of rock to be enjoyed. With it's demise, I've been waiting for a style that would offer something different and challenging. Liquid Skin has offered such a divergent style unheard since Supertramp ventured on the scene so many years ago. This is not Pearl Jam or Dave Matthews or anyone else, this is something unique and wonderful. I truly enjoy listening to the entire album, not just a song or two as with most alternative music today. Melodic and charming, challenging with exquisite style and grace. It is simply the most enjoyable CD I've heard this year. Are they masters of current music? I don't know. Only time will tell. Enjoy it while you can.

I recently saw Gomez live at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC after a few months of listening to "Liquid Skin" and "Bring it On". They owned the stage and put on an impressive show. "Liquid Skin" continues their tradition of homegrown music for the thinking person. "Hangover" opens the album with a beautiful, soaring vocal. It's truely a pleasure to listen to. Other major highlights include "We Haven't Turned Around", "Rhythm and Blues Alibi", and the last song (the title alludes me right now). These guys meld unique keyboard and guitar sounds to create amazing songs. I encourage everyone to check out their first album "Bring it On" as well. In many respects, it's better than "Liquid Skin". But "Liquid Skin" provides us with another honest, innovative performance by the U.K.'s best band no one's ever heard of.
