Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
An ambitious debut, Liquidizer integrates disparate musical styles into a single formula for pop music. The songs are typically anchored on guitar hooks and punctuated by noisy samples of found sounds, all of which support soaring (though occasionally uninspired) vocal melodies. Jesus Jones is well-versed in several modern genres, incorporating fragments of rock, industrial, hip-hop and techno into their vocabulary. Unfortunately, these influences often remain distinct, failing to fuse into a cohesive structure (although this does not distract from the stand-alone power of the singles). Therefore, Liquidizer functions principally as a testament to the diversity of contemporary music. --Michael Massa

4.0 out of 5 stars a bit noisy, but energetic fun, July 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Liquidizer (Audio CD)
Jesus Jones puts gituars & samples together in a way that is a bit like noise at times, but if you like energetic music, this is for you. It is uniquely creative....

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying album and a good starting place for Jesus Jones., May 25, 2000

I was one of those people instantly hooked by "Right Here, Right Now" and its root album, Doubt, which was this band's second album. I went back to get Liquidizer and found a noisier, colder sound, but still filled with hooks, Mike Edwards' sensible punk/pop vocals, and memorable guitar parts. "Info Freako" is the standout song, a manic stack of distorted chords and shouted vocals that sound positively anthemic, though with a definite Sex Pistols sneer. And "Never Enough" is another of those Jesus Jones songs that sounds like it should've been written long ago, seamless songcraft and rowdy attitude mixed in with the band's above-par lyrics to form a great college-rock track.

Doubt was uniformly the stronger album; Liquidizer remains worthy of exploration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but "Doubt" was the more generic of the first 2 releases, February 13, 2009
"Never Enough" and "Move Mountains" might have been reproduced in variations throughout the rest of the songs on the CD (tape for me in 1990)but all of the songs (including "Info Freako" and "Broken Bones".. with the exception of the Crazyhead cover "I Don't Want That Kind of Love") carried a much heavier punch than anything you'll hear on "Doubt". I can't tell you what a breath of fresh air this was in the summer of '90; only Urban Dance Squad's "Mental Floss For The Globe" demanded the same sort of sonic attention. It's a shame that the CD is out of print. Do yourself a favor and buy this one first; you'll see there's no competition between "Liquidizer" and "Doubt", with the latter cohesive only when its generic pop is taken into consideeration.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very good
The music production on this album is rather poor and the songs are very generic and really sound outdated. Read more
