This review is from: Lisa's War (Point) (Paperback)
My fellow classmates and I read the novel titled Lisa's War, written by Carol Matas, copyright 1987, and published by Scholastic, Inc. The themes of the book are bravery, courage, and it is an inspiring book. The book is about a girl going through her teen years during World War II. She and her family are Jewish. Lisa's War is an historical fiction book.Lisa is about the age of twelve when the German Nazis invade Denmark. Lisa and her family live in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her brother, Stefan, is part of theResistance movement. Lisa desperately wants to join and help Stefan and his friend Jesper. Lisa is accepted and must be very stealthy, because if she was caught it could endanger herself and her family. Lisa's father secretly tells her that the German Nazis are going to round up all the Jewish people in Copenhagen on Rosh Hashanah. Can Lisa help the Jews of Copenhagen? This book has inspired me to read more about the Holocaust because it showed how horrible and scary these times were and how much the people had to suffer. My opinion and the author's opinion are very similar in that we both believe the German Nazis were mean and hurtful to the Jewish society during World War II. The Nazis would take families out of their home without respect of their wishes. This persuasive novel tells you that you should help your country when called upon to do so. I would recommend this novel to an older age group because of the violent and intese themes. This book is a powerful adventure of a young girl growing up during the Holocaust as a Jew. I love this book and I am so interested to see the Holocaust from another person's view and perspectives.

in this book LISA'S WAR many things happened. It was very interesting and you wont want to put the book down. Even though it is very short with only 108 pages it is very thirlling. From leaving underground newspapers on street cars to helping Jews on boats so they can get to Sweeden. Lisa is very active trough the whole book. (...) I urge any one above the age of 12 to read this book.

Lisa's War,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Lisa's War (Hardcover)
I just read a really great book! Lisa-the main character-is a young girl living in Denmark at the time of World War II. This wouldn't be a problem, but Lisa is a Jew. Lisa and her best friend Susanne (who is not a Jew) want to help the Jews in their country. Something happens to Susanne's family, which makes her hate the German's even more. She is traumatized by this event, but after a while she is back to life. Lisa gets suspicious of her brother and his best friend (Stefan and Jesper) of doing things against the Germans. Eventually Lisa and Susanne catch on and start to help them. Some very important news is told to Lisa's family and Lisa will have to be braver than ever before. Will Lisa and her family survive living during World War II? - Read the book to find out! You won't be sorry!

I read a book called Lisa's War. It was written by Carol Matas and was published by Scholastic INc. The genre of the book is historical fiction. The themes of the book are bravery and courage. This book is interesting because it is about a girl trying to solve her problems. I agree with the author that the Holocaust was a terrrible thing to happen to people. This book pretty much tell me that you have to face up to your fears. This book affected me by showing me in more detail how people were killed [during the Holocaust], and how that is so cruel. Lisa's war is about a gilr named Lisa. Lisa is brave and courageous. She is the main character of the book. This book took place during the Holocaust in Copenhagaen, Denmark. Then, something happens. German soldiers invaded Denmark. They took over Copenhagen - their schools were surrounded by barbed wire. There were Germans soldiers all over the streets of Copenhagen. If you want to find out what happens [to Lisa and her family during the Resistance movement], read Lisa's War to find out. I think readers who are 11 years and older should read this book because of its content, and because it is an action-packed adventure.

Lisa's War is a story about how a Danish family wanted to make a stop to the Nazi-Jewish persecution. Very interesting and powerful, it represents how the Danes made a difference in the war.

I read this book for the first time back in fourth grade and remember being completely overtaken by it (and, subsequently was not at all impressed by the similar Number the Stars, which deals with the same topic but with much less depth). It very poignantly takes a look at a young woman's youth (12-15 years old) in occupied Denmark during World War II. Because the novel is written in present tense, there is no chance for hindsight: the story exists completely in the now (except for the prologue), and as it progresses, the reader is left to wonder what will happen and even whether the heroine and her family will live. The novel is very succinct and emotional, describing how an average girl is forced into extraordinary circumstances with a choice either to fight or to 'stay safe.' Eventually, she realizes that there is no safety in appeasement of the German occupants and participates in the resistance herself, performing an adult's role while still just a girl. Lisa's--and her friends' and family's--strength of character, national pride, and human compassion lead the group through the Germans' attempt to remove all the Jews over Rosh Hashana, and the book is a wonderful historical look at Denmark and youth during the Second World War.

Carol Matas is a local writer from my home city of Winnipeg. I was Lisa's age when I first read this book in junior high school. It is a brilliant, exciting story and was one of the first novels I'd read that left a lasting mark on me - a permanent interest and curiousity about the past, and about the Holocaust in particular. This interest led me to more Carol Matas books - Jesper (the sequel to Lisa's War), Daniel, The Fusion Factor, and others. She is truly an amazing writer and I base this praise on the fact that this story affected me so deeply that today when I picked it up again to read it through for the second time after so many years it still brought me to tears. Carol is adept at taking history and making it feel REAL. In this case she chose a shining example of human courage and I am very grateful for her selection. I would never have known about the Danish resistance if I had not read this book. I would never have known that the Danes fought against the Germans and saved their fellow Jews with such tremendous success. The Holocaust was full of so much evil and darkness that it is a relief to know that in amongst it all were a few rays of light.
