I was rebuilding a Kawasaki V-twin lawn mower engine in a John Deere GX345. The cylinder OD is just under 3" so that was my search criteria for a reamer. I personally have never used a ridge reamer before because usually if it's that bad the rest of it is junk and it's just cheaper to buy a new engine. In this case the engine was in good shape and the cylinders were still within max wear limits. One of the things I noticed about the description was that it has rollers to help guide it in the cylinder, this was one reason I bought it. It was a perfect fit in my 2.9" cylinder, cut the ridge off the cylinder very cleanly and the rollers were definitely a plus in guiding it around the cylinder. I could not have been happier with it.

I have to agree with a couple of the other reviews about the lack of clear instructions. Being a mechanic for many years, I had a basic understanding of the process and sort of knew what I was doing. It has a wide carbide knife that "scrapes" away the ridge. The key is to make many passes that shave just a little off each time. Be careful not to take off too much. I can see how this would be easy to cut off too much if you are not careful.

This is a very handy piece of kit for the motor mechanic. The design has been improved by the use of rollers that some vintage reamers didn't have. Some people may question the need for such a tool but there are two good reasons for removing the wear ridge in the cylinder. (1) Removing the ridge will make the pistons much easier to remove. (2) If the ridge is left and new piston rings are fitted, trouble is likely to ensue. The old rings will have worn to suit the ridge but new ones won't have worn. With the ridge still in place the new rings are liable to break when the engine is revved. At one time in the UK it was possible to buy "groove-dodger-rings" for the top piston ring but these seem to have vanished from the marketplace.

Ridge reamer worked as advertised. "O" ring broke after one engine task. Company should ship product with a spare "O" ring.

If you want to remove the ridge of the cylinder in a nice clean fashion that does it with ease. Then this is not the reamer for you. The o-ring rubber band is a joke as in it breaks after the second hole, the centering bolt like to back out and is made of cheap soft steel so it's easy to round the head. Oh and don't forget that when the bolt backs out and the centering fingers and knife back off all in one quick motion, it leave a nice gouge in the top of the cylinder! I guess that's ok though since the machine shop can fix that for an added cost! This thing is a joke! Spend the extra and buy a lathe style reamer. much easier and smoother to use.

I only used this tool on 1 cylinder . The tool worked well removing the carbon build up but I didn't like the aggressive bite it had so I finished the rest by hand and decided not to use it on the rest of the cylinders. In my opinion the bevel it leaves is too deep and is dangerously close to the top piston ring for the engine I was rebuilding. It's been sitting in my shop for a couple months. When I picked it up it completely fell apart. The O ring is cracked and very brittle. Even when it was new out of the box the O ring seems undersized and is very stressed due to the weight of parts. Very disappointed with this overpriced piece of junk.

I've used this reamer to pull out some pistons that needed some work where a nut fell into the the combustion chamber but didn't break anything to the point of needing replacement. Easily allowed me to pull the pistons without any damage to the rings and get them back in again. Really easy to use and aligns great.
