Only one I use,

This is a great oil filter wrench. It fits almost all passenger car filters and most smaller trucks. You have to have a 3/8" drive ratchet to use with it. You may need a ratchet extension as well, depending on your oil filter location.
The two pieces that grip the filter are connected with a spring. You pull them apart with your hands, put the wrench on the filter and the spring will pull the pieces into the filter. Hook up your ratchet and loosen, the wrench bites into the filter right away. Easy. This wrench is for filter removal only. ALWAYS TIGHTEN NEW OIL FILTER BY HAND. NEVER TIGHTEN WITH A WRENCH.

I've done many oil changes, from using those plastic so called "specific ones" to metal straps, to using a screwdriver. I've even used the 3 prong ones, they didn't work as well as this bad boy. I have a new car ready for its first oil change and the factory puts them on tight. The three prong ones didn't move it at all. This thing grabbed it and was out immediately. Most times you don't even need the wrench, only if it was installed really tight.
Don't spend your money on specific sized wrenches, especially the plastic ones. Filters vary by manufacturers of the filters, not the car. The ones that specify car makes are usually the OEM ones, not aftermarket filters. This is in reference to the review before mine. The wrench is mainly for removal of the filter, not installing. You technically don't need to tighten the filter so much that you lock it, it's not necessary. They make the gaskets in the filters thick, it compresses enough that you don't need it super tight. I would suggest tightening it and then loosen it 1/8 to 1/4 turn. FYI. Most of the people at those parts store don't know much, not saying all, but most. Just because they've never seen such a tool like this, doesn't mean it's bad. Get the info from the people that have actually done an oil change.

This is a very high quality wrench made of very sturdy steel. It is compact and fits in tight spaces. All you need to do is attach it to a socket wrench, put it over the oil filter and turn. It grips the oil filter very well. I'm confident that this could be the last oil filter wrench I ever need to buy.

I do most of my car's maintenance on my own. Oil changes, filter changes, tire rotations, brake checks, etc.
Unfortunately one time I was unable to do the oil & oil filter change myself and took it to my dealer. Fast forward 6,000 miles and it was time to change the oil again. Everything goes smoothly as planned, until I get to the part where I have to change the filter. For some reason, the previous tech at the dealer must have had a bad day because he screwed on the filter so tight I could not get it loose no matter what I did or tried. It was on so tight, I had to leave it on. Another 6,000 miles go by and this time I came with a filter wrench from Autozone. BIG MISTAKE! The thing was a piece of crap and didn't make the filter unscrew an inch. ANOTHER 6,000 miles go by and I see the maintenance light go on. I think to myself "oh crap, how am I gonna get the filter off this time?" Well I browsed Amazon and I found this little gem. I promptly ordered it and with Amazon Prime I received it in 2 days. MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED. This filter wrench did the trick in SECONDS. I literally shed a tear as I saw how effortlessly this thing removed my filter. THANK YOU LISLE AND AMAZON!

I purchased this for small engines; the filter is generally in tight quarters and so there's no way to grip the filter. Since this grips the top of the filter, it will go on virtually anywhere.
You use a 3/8" drive (not included) and the filter comes right off. The idea is straightforward, but the execution in this tool is first rate. This works great on smaller car filters, but it work even better on the small filters found on home/garden equipment. If you change your own oil, this is a must-have for your toolbox.

100% made in US of A, about 250g of Iowa steel (pretty hefty for its size!), and a pinch of US ingenuity. The design of this filter wrench is brilliant! Simple and effective, the more you turn, the tighter it grips. I have wasted enough money on various types of useless wrenches from the auto parts stores. This filter is the best by FAR! Only used for removal. Always hand tighten!

A Great Oil Filter Wrench,
I purchased this wrench and the similar Lisle 63250 Wide Range Oil Filter wrench (for larger filters). I can report that they are both well made, and they both work really well at removing stuck-on oil filters where you only have an "end view" of the filter.
Here are some specific likes: 1) The two jaws, each with two biting "teeth", grip the filters tightly. I put my "three finger" style wrenches (which don't grip nearly as well)into the recycling bin after using this wrench for the first time. 2) The jaws are spring loaded, which holds the wrench in place on the filter while you get in position to turn the ratchet. A nice feature. 3) The harder you turn, the tighter it grips. You may dent the end of the filter a little, but the filter will break free. 4) Between the two wrenches, they cover every size from small lawn tractor filters up through automotive and truck (F350 etc)filters. You don't need a large collection of "cup style" filters. I put a few of these in the recycling bin as well after using this wrench for the first time. Lisle has solved the oil filter removal issue with these wrenches.

Works On Subaru Impreza,

The wrench worked perfectly on my 2008 Subaru Impreza, which has a very difficult to reach oil filter that is not sized to match the existing cup type wrenches on the market. Well made and sturdy. A great deal for the price. Too bad the shipping was so expensive!

I had to do an oil change on a 2005 Honda CR-V, The filter is behind the motor and is impossible to get at it with a strap wrench. It was off in two seconds.
We use these where i work as well at Jiffy Lube they make life easy for hard to remove filters and this one worked well Only complaint i have is the spring had a small stretch in it but it does not effect how it works so i gave it a 5/5

Impreza Oil Filter Wrench,

This is perfect for my new Subaru Impreza WRX. The exhaust wraps around where the filter is and makes it hard to get your hand in there without getting burned.
This tool helps to eliminate the burnt hand and gets the filter off without a problem. Just grab a 3/8" extension and use your wrench and your set to change your oil. |
