Book Description

March 24, 2005
Eve, Sarah, Rachel, Delilah, Ruththeir names live on, but their ancient stories have been obscured. This newly issued paperback presents a sumptuously illustrated retelling of the lives of 18 women in the Hebrew Bible. Author Miki Raver pairs each vibrant and daring tale with an eloquent meditation on their meaning for modern women. Beautiful reproductions of classic Biblical art from such masters as Rubens, Brueghel, Raphael, and Chagall illustrate these dramatic stories. This rich marriage of art, literature, and spirituality offers substantive and entertaining reading, as well as a fresh entry into traditional faith. The perfect Chanukah or Bat Mitzvah gift, Listen to Her Voice is a book to treasure and share.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Listen to her Voice' is a book to enjoy for its pictures, its literature and its art. What the author presents is the result of her own journey into Judaism as she found her way by studying the stories of the matriarchs. She identified eighteen women of the Bible who brought it alive for her... Raver succeeds in producing a non-sexist description of the powerful contribution made by the matriarchs to Jewish history and Jewish understanding. Her book takes a position and frankly offers a point of view. Taken together, these two books fully recognize the power of the matriarchs with all their faults and all their courage. These were strong women who provide appropriate ancestry for today's Jewish feminists. They would undoubtedly revel in the leadership positions being taken by women in the Jewish community and the scholarly productivity based on a feminist perspective which is well exemplified. -- Jewish Journal --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved This Fine Book, December 29, 2001
By A Customer
I found the book most enlightening. It seems that so much of religous thought and teaching of Judao/Chritian religions Leave out the feminine voices and personalities of the old testament. I was very impressed with what these women accomplished with their lives and with Layne Redmond's midrash type commentary after each. I learned more than I have for years about God / Goddess working through people.
