PreS-Gr. 1. From the Learning to Get Along series, these colorful books encourage children to learn social skills. In Listen an African American boy explains what listening means: keeping quiet, watching the person who talks, thinking about what is being said, and asking questions when he doesn't understand. He also talks about using those skills in the classroom and at home. Similarly, in Share a red-haired girl learns techniques for sharing, then shows how she shares and takes turns when playing at home with her sister and friends. Each book ends with the child feeling good about using his or her new skills. The bright line-and-wash illustrations feature multiracial groups of children engaged in familiar activities. The writing is purposeful, but it is also practical in approach and sensitive to the problems and feelings of young children. A good choice for teachers seeking books that reinforce familiar classroom messages. Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

Cheri J. Meiners, M.Ed. was born in Logan, Utah, and lives in Maryland with her husband David. They have six children and one grandchild.

The 'Learning to Get Along' series of 15 books (and one software product) evolved from books that Cheri wrote for her own children. In 2008, Reach Out and Give won the Carol D. Reiser children's book award for promoting volunteerism. The series was also a finalist in 2006 for Learning Magazine's Teacher's Choice Award. In 2005, Booklist named the books 'Top 5 Character Education Series'. Several of the books are currently translated into Portuguese, Arabic, Korean, Slovak and Indonesian and Greek.

Her education included studying art in London, studying Swedish history and culture at Stockholm University, student teaching on a Ute Indian reservation in Utah, and graduating with High Honors in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University. She also volunteered as a missionary in Italy for a year and a half and later taught first graders in Idaho. She earned her masters degree in Elementary and Gifted Education at Utah State University, where she also taught classes and supervised student teachers.

Book is colorful, keeps childrens attention, I would advise it best for a 3-5 yr old, depending on maturity of the child. (Basically if they can be still and listen) it has nice big words so a beginning reader could try to read some by themself. I love good books that teach manners! We got this book from the library, but I would love the hardback version of this book as well as most of them in this series!

I think this one is our favorite. The little boy looks so intently at his teacher. He learns how to pay attention even when there are distractions. These books are cleverly written and I just love the illustrations. Nice representation of all ethnic groups.

All the books in the 'Learning to Get Along' series are fantastic. They teach vital social skills (paying attention, sharing, respecting others property, etc) to children in a way that they can understand.

You can't go wrong with any of these books!
