A Debate Movie,
By A Customer
This review is from: Listen to Me [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As a high school debate coach, I use this movie ocassionally in class. It illustrates the atmosphere of college forensics tournaments, including events other than debate, even though it is not precise in portraying "reality." My students like to examine the debates and critique what happens in the climactic final round in front of the Supreme Court. Kurt Cameron and Jami Gertz have great appeal with high school students. As a movie, it is about average in quality and storyline--it is fairly predictable and slightly melodramatic; however, it is one of the few movies to provide a glimpse into competitive speech, so it will be of particular interest to those who come into contact with this activity (parents, students, teachers, etc.).

this movie shows the real heart in debate,

This review is from: Listen to Me [VHS] (VHS Tape)
this moovie not only shows what a debate should be with all the heart you can put into it. It also shows the struggle many a young gril has gone through, and with friends like tucker she made it through. This movie shows the power of friendship at its all time high. Not only is it a made a good movie by its content but by its one liners lie "How can you just walk away from debate!" and "I lift cars for you every night" and the most inmportant "WE NEED A PLAN!" Speaking as a debater I think all debates should be like that with that much emtion and that much support. Everyone should see this movie and learn form it, Listen to Me!

An excellent character study revolving around Roe vs. Wade,

This review is from: Listen to Me [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Listen to Me is a profound and moving drama starring the great Roy Scheider and big 80's stars Kirk Cameron and Jami Gertz. The story involves a college debate team's attempts to make emotional sense of their issues about their assigned topic: abortion. Arguing both sides, as debaters must, they come to terms with their true opinions and find peace with each other.

Listen to Me,

It has been several years since I have seen this movie and it is one that still sticks in my head. It is a fantastic movie. It deals with many issues that are common and sometimes forgotten. Of course the abortion debate is one thing but the other issues dealt with are just as moving. The disability, sexual frustration, trust between friends, misunderstandings, and the kid pushed too hard. This movie is one of the best movies I have ever seen. As I said, I have not seen it in years and still I can remember almost every line. It is a must see for everyone especially teenagers.

This is an excellent 80s movie. That brings together 3 different characters on a journey of live. A rich kid,ex-juvie-farmer, hardworking book-warm all come together(with their share of problems and complaints)on the university's debate team. Excellent background music too bad they didn't make a soundtrack to the david foster molidy"listen to me". it would've been a hit.

It has been many years since I've seen this film but it is by far one of the better ones. It is such a touching film really well written and a good message to it. It really out to be put out on DVD I think many would like it and benefit from this film. I for one would definitely buy if they released it onto DVD!!!!

A movie to watch just for fun!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Listen to Me [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The acting wasn't GREAT and the story line would OBVIOUSLY never happen. Who would actually tell something so personal as to getting an abortion after being raped to win a debate when she never told anyone else before? (sorry for giving a way part of the movie) But the reason why I give it so many stars is because it had such an affect on me that I've remembered this movie from when I was a child with fond memories. Going past all the bad acting and the far from being realistic it was moving enough to make me remember it. If you remember to watch the movie just to watch a FICTIONAL STORY it can actually be a great film.

An '80's gem, with great actors early in thier careers.,

This movie is a classic tale of love and loss, set in the heady days of college. A true '80's flick, it has all of the usual drama you would expect - but then it goes and throws an unexpected twist or two. It showcases the early careers of several stars, and also directly addresses the entire controversy surrounding that most '80's of debate - abortion (but NOT in a preachy way - both sides are well represented and debated). I recommend it for any fan of '80's movies, the stars themselves, college years or debate class. It has all of that - and more.

Controversial!,

Though it has been years since I saw "Listen", I remember it not for the quality of the acting, which I thought was fine, but for delivering the most eloquent argument against abortion I had ever seen, even to this day. Any movie that gets the range of comments that have been posted, from rave to rage, is certainly has to be called controversial. So the debate scenes did not match up to the life experiences of some, it is a STORY. Its message is very, very strong, and delivered quite effectively. Isn't that what movies, books, plays, photography, et al are about? I just saw "Cider House Rules", the flip side of the abortion discussion from "Listen". Try watching "Listen" and "Cider House" back to back for what should be quite an emotional and intellectual experience. I rate both films at least 9 out of 10. PS: I am 64, male, anti-abortion, and pro-choice. |
