Stellar premier CD from SF bay area band. You need this!, September 18, 2006
This review is from: Listen to My Shapes (Audio CD)
Sensations is a current new project from guitarist/vocalist Greg Loiacono (pr. 'loy-a-CON-oh'), also known as half of Mother Hips' singer-songwriter team.
Certainly you can hear similarities to the 'Hips on this album, but the differences are exciting. Instantly engaging rock that's vaguely retro and nicely timeless. Rootsy, psychey, and something else. Sweet when it's mellow and infectious when it kicks. Reminiscent of that old favorite album you haven't heard in so long, the one that still hits you just right. Playful lyrics that suggest a surprising spirituality.
There's not a thing wrong with Mother Hips, Greg's off-again / on-again collaboration with Tim Bluhm and cohorts. But part of what's so exciting about Sensations is to hear Greg as frontman, no longer politely deferring as he shares the spotlight. That freedom suits him, and he shines.
Though Greg is clearly large and in charge, the contributions of bass player Paul Hoaglin are integral to the sound of the band and the shapes of the production on this treasure of a CD.
Check out the album (I'm looking forward to a follow-up) and jump at the opportunity to catch Sensations live if you can.
