Listen to The Silent Night is an interesting re-telling of the Christmas Story as it tells the story with both reverence and whimsy - a style that is sure to appeal to both parents and kids. The rhyming is spot on, making this a fantastic read aloud choice. The solemn nature of the telling is interrupted by the inclusion of the Sounds of the Silent Night. "It was not such a silent night. Hear the moo! moo! moo! of a cow or two!" The repetition of the phrase "It was not such a silent night" and the inclusion of those wonderful sounds ("flut-flut-flutter of angel wings") ensure that you will be able to hold the attention of even the youngest of audiences. The story ends with the birth of Jesus and the phrase "A miraculous Christmas night!"

The illustrations are done in muted tones as befitting a story that takes place at night, and do a wonderful job of helping to move the story along. From the shepherds guarding their sheep under the night sky, to the ethereal angels appearing from heaven, these paintings perfectly convey the majesty of the occasion. An excellent choice for any preschooler or early elementary Christmas collection.

One can just picture the anticipation of Baby Jesus' arrival to the stable where He is to be born on Christmas Day! From the owl to the donkey to the people, all utter sounds that the author incorporates into a joyful preparation for the Christ Child. With the sounds created by the author, one can experience the event in a thoughtful intuitive way. With all the commercialism of the Christmas season, it is refreshing to see a book that honors the birth of the Christ Child. My grandchildren were enthralled with both the writing and the illustrations, and they range in age from 1-10 years old!

Mackall looks at the Nativity in a beautifully simplistic and natural way. Her lyrical prose adds an almost hush to the noises that surround the night. The reverence with which she tells the story is rare and near perfect. Illustrations by Lou Fancher and Steve Johnson elegantly tie the story together into a harmonious whole. If you don't already have it, this is one book you'll want to add to your Christmas collection.

As a parent, I really like this book. The wording, the pictures, the story all great. However, my children (age 2 and 4) for whatever reason can't seem to sit through this book. Other books of the same length or longer keep their attention just fine, this one just doesn't seem to spark any interest to listen. Perhaps for older children? I will keep trying because I really like the book.
