Editorial Reviews

2012 debut album from the Illinois native who won over American Idol viewers with her unique, standout performances and jazzy vocal style as a Season 10 finalist. For fans of Adele, Any Winehouse, Corinne Baily Rae, Joss Stone, Duffy, and American Idol.

Haley's smoky, raspy voice is in fine form throughout.

Haley debut Albun exceeded my expectations, very well produced, the musical arrangements and the lyrics convey freshness and youth with the wonderful voice of Haley.

It is very rare for me to love EVERY song on an album, but this is one of them.

Ah, American Idol debut albums. Dangerous territory. All too often, it seems like talented young singers get produced to death and wind up creating a product that feels neither authentic nor particularly interesting, as if the producers were trying way too hard to turn a singer into a commodity.

It's not to say that Haley Reinhart's debut CD is under-produced, exactly... all one would have to do is listen to a few bars of "Oh My!" to realize that lack of production will not be an issue here. But what sets LISTEN UP! apart is that it feels like we're getting an authentic sense of who this singer is.

Haley is a throwback. She sounds like she would have been in perfect company 40 years ago, and her nods to 60s girl groups and 70s Motown are just a lot of fun.

Haley's smoky, raspy voice is in fine form throughout. If Randy Jackson hadn't hated her last season, he would have said she could "sing the phone book." Of course, no one uses phone books anymore, but I digress. She sounds incredible, especially on "Undone" and "Now That You're Here," which has a refrain that sounds like a jazzy take on a classic Michael Jackson hook.

One thing that watchers of American Idol may not have known last season (I surely didn't) is that Ms. Reinhart is a strong songwriter. She co-wrote nine of the ten tracks here, and you'll find hooks galore and some really nice and memorable turns of phrase. "Liar" is an intriguing take on a relationship that is on the rocks because her man had the nerve to tell her the truth. I haven't heard that one before. Interesting. "Hit The Ground Running" is what we might have called "cheeky" back in the day.

I have been watching Idol for 11 seasons and I think that Haley Reinhart may be the most significant artist to emerge from this powerful platform since Kelley Clarkson. She is that good. Some find her cocky, maybe a little arrogant. I think that she is confident. After listening to this CD you will know why. "Listen Up" is a powerful compilation of tunes that you would be hard pressed to rank in order of preference. They are ALL good. Usually one or two stand out and then there are the schlocky songs. Not this CD. All 10 are very solid.

Ms. Reinhart has managed to come up with a very unique format, melding retro R & B / some elements of disco (tastefully) into a sophisticated, funky, yet still very much pop in genre CD - making it the ultimate crossover album. There are elements of the 60's girl bands- think Diana Ross and The Supremes "Wasted Tears", some Adele mixed in "Undone". There is also some songs that will become pure signature Haley, "Hit the Ground Running" and "Now That You are Here" are great as well with the latter being the best track on the album.

I am blown away that 19 (Interscope records) let her make an album like this. It is completely different than any Idol album ever released, but in a very good way. I believe that Jimmy and the boys at Interscope have a lot of confidence in her abilty- she co wrote all the songs (except "Free"), and her dad plays guitar on four of the tunes.

I believe that this is the start of something very big. It's hard to listen to this CD and think otherwise.

Hands down, my favorite idols of all time are Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert and after hearing this album Haley is now the third added to my list.

Haley Reinhart went from one of my least favorite idols last year to one of my all-time favorite American Idols all in the span of one season.

I was initially worried about her chances for a record deal since she started off very shaky but fought for her life and clawed her way to third as one of the only shining lights in one of my least favorite seasons of idol ever. I still think she was robbed!

My worries were that her heavy handed growling on idol wouldn't really make a listenable pop album.

Either way, I've been looking forward to this album since I heard the ultra cute single Free and this is one of the best debut albums from an idol that I've ever heard. The songs are all varied but also work very well together in maintaining a cohesive jazzy, pop, 60s vibe, which is absolutely the perfect style for Haley.

Almost all of the songs are upbeat and very summer-y. The lyrics are also well-written and seem thought out for this kind of pop. Haley also keeps her sometimes annoying growling that she used on idol to a minimum, which may or may not be good depending on your perspective. Her voice has a very light, throwback style that's perfect for the songs on the CD. The music style reminds me a little bit of Duffy (with a MUCH less annoying voice), Joss Stone and Adele mixed together (but less angry and more upbeat and catchy.)

Overall, she sounds great and there isn't a bad song on the CD. I can honestly say I like every single song. Since I bought the album today, I've listened to it quite a few times already and my idol fan co-workers were digging it as well.

Support the idols that can actually sing and purchase the album! If you're hesitating about buying this, let all the five star reviews convince you and go out there and get it. :-)
